Saddle Up For NYC'S Newest Gay Bar

The only Gulch most gays seem to know is Elvira, but suddenly a western-styled, cowboy-hatted joint has opened in Hell's Kitchen, for those craving both a hoedown and a ho-down.

It's Flaming Saddles Saloon (793 Ninth Avenue, at 53rd Street), which goes against the sophisticated, too-cool-for-school trend in gay nightlife, instead promising friendly cowpokes, so to speak, and hot shooters, as it were.

It's "the new kickass Country Western Gay Saloon, where the Bad to the Bone Bartenders strut their stuff (behind as well as on top of the bar) & always aim to to please.

"Customers are advised to pull themselves up by their boot straps, put on their Tight Ass Jeans, and boogie on over to the Wild Wild West Side of NYC."

Yee-haw!

Might this not sound a lil' bit resonant of a trip to a County Bears Jamboree?

I'm not sure, but there was a big crowd at the opening last night -- where they unsuccessfully tried to lower a red bandanna over my head as I entered -- and Lord knows, every single out gay in country will surely drop by.

Like, um, Chely Wright and, um, er ...

Aw, hell. Leather queens always looked like the Oak Ridge Boys anyway.

Hee-Haw!  I am a gay man who has been "into" country & roots music for the past 30 years.  It would be a nice change to hear some real music at a gay bar.  SF has had several C & W bars for years and in many cities I've been to, everywhere from Nashville to Salt Lake, it's not unusual to find gay bars that play and gay men who like country music.  I'll take Willie or Tracy Nelson (no relation) over Lady Gaga any day!

Willie is a national treasure. I really love "Sing It!" by Tracy Nelson, Marcia Ball and Irma Thomas.

I like Tanya Tucker and would love it if they did a night of her music.

This is surreal.

Why would NYC gays in 2011 want a country and western bar??

As MM said... "which goes against the sophisticated, too-cool-for-school trend in gay nightlife," ..believe it or not, folks get tired of the twinky fashionista scene.

Back in the day, "western bar" was sorta code for divey, casual, leave-your-'tude-at-home, beer joint. (i.e. - most of Christpher St.)
