Jack Nicholson Cries Buckets In New Film!

Nicholson in Corman's "The Terror"

It happens in Alex Stapleton's wonderful doc Corman's World (coming in December), about the inspired antics of renegade director Roger Corman.

Early in the film -- which I just caught at the New York Film Festival -- Jack deadpans, "By mistake, Roger almost made a good picture once in a while.

"I was never in it -- but that was as much my fault as the next guy!"

But later on, Nicholson admits that Corman -- who'd given him his start -- was his lifeblood in the industry for many years.

Saying that he hopes Corman doesn't feel his gushy admiration is just "hot air" and adding that a lot of people love Corman, Jack starts uncontrollably sobbing, hiding his face with his hands.

It's a really touching moment -- even more so when you consider that Nicholson doesn't dole out interviews that readily and won't even do commentary on DVDs of his movies.

Stapleton said she nabbed the interview by being a "professional stalker" for a long time, and it helped that Nicholson had heard that the project was legit and painless, so he sat down for her -- for five hours!

Now I'm crying.

p.s.

the reason corman now respectable---his cheap drive-in junk is not only better than today's 100 million dollar junk, but corman's cheap junk has even been remade into expensive junk...THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, among others.

and corman had a cameo in GODFATHER PART 2.

in the last ten (?) years corman has popped up in a # of documentarys----EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS and DECADE UNDER THE INFLUENCE....bruce dern does a good nicholson imitation in one of them.

THE TERROR----directed, in part, by: nicholson, jack hill, francis coppola, monte hellman, and a few minutes by corman.

now...corman is respectable, he even got an honoray oscar----but decades prior, no critic or actor wanted anything to do with him; sam kinison joked how jessica hahn should do a roger corman movie, instead of getting new  publicity by bringing up that she dated kinison at one time.

Don't you mean hiding his face with his hands? Although hiding his hands with his face is an interesting image.

TCM showed some Corman films last night, but not any Nicholson ones. They showed the first (and best) Dracula and "Bucket if Blood".

In the doc, they discuss how Corman wanted something written quickly because he had those sets for an extra weekend. So some crazy script was cooked up in a panic. Nicholson is hilarious talking about the absurdities of the plot and how in fact, there wasn't any--though some monologue thrown in attempts to sum up who's been killed and why.

The photo you use of Nicholson is from "The Terror," which Corman made only because he had Boris Karloff's services paid for a couple more days and a big, empty set left over from something else. The result is to be avoided at ALL costs. It's not even a "good/bad movie." Just a terminally dull one. Dr.Conrad Murray should have used it instead of Propofol to give Michael Jackson a good night's sleep.

Corman was to film production what Musto is to journalism - single-handedly recuperating a neglected and derided mode of practice. That means there'll be Musto studies in journ school just as there's Corman studies in film! (But just to burst your bubble a bit, Madonna beat you to that distinction ... as did Keanu Reeves.)
