Well, I don't buy into any of this malarkey myself but Shirley's karmic explanation for gayness is different from the one I heard before: homosexuality in this life was supposedly a result of karmic debts incurred by you in your previous incarnation through overindulgence of your sexual appetites.

Supposedly being re-born a homosexual gave you the opportunity to completely give in to those carnal desires (bathhouse anybody?) or to learn to strike a balance and by doing so advance up the karmic ladder.

I make no comment on the offensiveness of either explanation.

I agree with her. If one believes in reincarnation, it makes sense that if in a past life, for example, I was a heterosexual female with desires for men, I could be born in the next life as a male, physically, with the same desires for men. Makes perfect sense to me, and that is not justifying homosexuality, but explaining it from a spiritual perspective. For us Buddhists and Hindus, makes perfect sense.

This is still coming from a place of finding an "explanation" for homosexuality, since we're "supposed" to be straight. At least Shirley mentions it now: in an earlier book, she described a director friend (she didn't mention he was gay) as having a "girlfriend of sorts."

/facepalm. Great. As soon as someone finds a "spiritual" (read: religious) "explanation" for LGBT, that's just another door opening for some quack remedy.

I guess having her daughter Sasha being the 'model' for Regan in the Excorcist really did her head in! She's cuckoo....wonder what Annette B. thinks of her 'spiritualism' LOL

I don't know if that is THE explanation for being gay, but it goes with Shirl's other ideas about reincarnation nicely.  It's another way of explaining why we are multi faceted people, not just in terms of sexual identity.  Though it may sound a little kooky, it's not one bit more kooky than the ridiculous, usually politically motivated, outlandish ideas people routinely  believe about religion and brain wash their vulnerable children with.  Note: I love Babs' movie, On a Clear Day!
