Kim Kardashian Does Not Destroy The Culture

Last night, I spoke before a group of gay journalism students at Columbia and was surprised to find that one of their top concerns was that Kim Kardashian brings down our culture!

I was amazed that serious Ivy League students even devote brain cells to thinking about the Kardashian clan.

But I was also taken aback that they didn't realize that 15-minute "famous for the sake of being famous" stars are nothing new and nothing all that dangerous.

There have always been socialites, party people, Zsa Zsa Gabors, camera grabbers, Warhol Superstars, and "It girls" who seize the spotlight without destroying the world.

They have always been fun guilty pleasures, cartoon characters to dish and dis while tracking their every move and dissecting their every offense by the proverbial watercooler.

And they don't end up decimating mankind, it turns out.

They're simply a momentary distraction from the real achievers -- the Meryl Streeps and Kate Winslets and so on who are artists seeking validation through their creative work, not their crass desperation.

The 15-minute folks are a palate cleanser, providing candy-colored, larger-than-life antics to gag to, giving us a glamorous common enemy to envy and resent so we can spend the rest of the day admiring our icons.

Besides, Kim does do something -- she has a TV show, and as a sidebar she merchandises every aspect of her life with a scary willingness to self-exploit en route to world domination.

But don't worry, she won't achieve that. She'll be a footnote of a footnote if you just hold your breath and wait.

a rose by any other name...would still be as soul sucking as a Kardashian....no, famous for being famous is nothing new...the ferocity in which the media follows & idolizes absolutely is....the perception of our country from those who don't exist in it, is that we are lazy, fat, criminals...why? because we follow around criminals & call them stars, we celebrate lazy drunks & put them on the cover of our papers & magazines....no she's not personally destroying culture, it's the media hurricane that insists on following her every single irrelevant move that does!

The Kardashan family made $65 million last year. When did the 15 minutes thing become so lucrative?

they always blame someone for the downing of society, in the 80s it was the PMRC going after heavy metal, prince and madonna

Men famous for sake of being famous from three different eras, in fact:  off the top of my head, Kato Kaelin, Jesus Luz, Spencer Pratt...   The only reason, in fact, that I know Jesus Luz' name is because of his 15 minutes with Madonna.  And, yes, I'm not proud of that.

The reasons most posters may not know all three names is because they had their 15 minutes, then vanished.  But that might have all changed with Twitter and reality TV shows -- oh, that's right, I, who do not have a TV, only know Spencer Pratt's name/affiliation because of the convergence of all media into this star-making machine.

I'm sure if you think about it, you can come up with more men's names.  I will readily admit there are far more women than men, but I think that's because this society expects men to behave badly and brashly, maybe even bordering shamelessly, but are ever-fascinated when women do so because, even to this day, though trying to we are still honor-bound to sex-identity expectations and perceptions. I think if you look at the history of women famous for the sake of being famous, the vast majority will fit this category.

But I think the reason people claiming we're doomed to cultural destruction about this latest case is that none of the women in the past had internet, cable-TV, vast world-wide distribution of products to aid their time in the sun, which, nowadays, has provided many of the species a deep, deep, frighteningly deep tan.  And you know what   They're still transmitting stuff about Spencer Pratt, so be afraid, be very afraid...

Wait, this is by Michael Musto?? Now I understand the sympathy and tolerance he has for the Kardashian-ese people. He, too, is known for reasons that aren't entirely clear to most and makes money out of the smoke. He is, in fact, the Nicole Ritchie of journalism.

"They're simply a momentary distraction from the real achievers--the Meryl Streeps and Kate Winslets and so on". REALLY??? So they're merely distractions?? If we count all the bimbos in the entertainment today we find that out of a 100 we have 98 Kardashians/Snookis/Lohans and maybe 2 Meryl Streeps. Another problem with this article is that while we know that they don't destroy the world, the way nobody does, these girls make REAL easy money, they become millionaires out of their own nothingness and many talented people are thus refused the opportunities because of course we can't all be on top. Guess what, the money Kardashian makes equals the money 30, 40 even 100 of us striving artists could have hoped to make through their craft. So your ass will literally take you the top while talent won't pay. If we accept the notion that this is fine or inevitable, then we are all contributing to the decline of culture, regardless of what this journalist says.

All the sex-tape girls will fade away, but their big asses will remain.

I never thought about it before, but are these culture-destroying, famous-for-being-famous people always (or almost always) female? Interesting.

Yes, a footnote is right. Along with Snooki, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Denise Richards, and the list goes on.

You are very optimistic. I am certain she will destroy the universe!!!!

His point is that there have always been flashy, trashy celebs and that doesn't hurt anyone.

And also, it's weird that you paint them as bimbos without any talent. Obviously she and her family are very smart and do have talent for marketing and for making people watch their show and buy their merchandise. Not just anyone off the street can achieve that, so it's definitely a talent.

It's not THEIR talent....its the people working "behind" the scenes that make them famous.....they do NOTHING but bitch, whine, and complain about EVERYTHING.  They are only famous because Kim made a sex tape and it mysteriously got leaked....then BOOM....everyone wanted to know more about them....If they were actually IN CHARGE of this empire it would GO DOWN, but they obviously have lots of people working at it.  Do you actually think THEY design the handbags, clothing, perfumes, etc. that they are plugging....NO FREAKIN WAY!  Don't give them credit for being smart business people.....its the people that actually WORK FOR THEM!
