A One-Two Punch For The Oscars

The Oscars desperately need to get some glory back after their last dismal telecast.

But when they announced Eddie Murphy as a host, we all wondered, "Isn't he on a bit of a career slide? Is he really the kind of piping-hot star they need right now?"

Besides, don't Eddie's hideous homophobic remarks linger painfully in the memory, along with his cloudy explanations for his bouts of personal behavior?

Well, it turns out Eddie's new movie, Tower Heist, didn't have a wow of an opening weekend, continuing his anti-ascendance streak.

It's hardly a disaster, but Heist's $24.03 million opening was "way down from Norbit," according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Way down from Norbit?

And now the director of Tower Heist, Brett Ratner (above), disgraced himself by giving a Q&A after a screening and telling the assembled, "Rehearsing is for fags."

Ratner apologized, claiming there isn't a prejudiced bone in his body, and the Academy quickly accepted his apology rather than dump him as Oscar producer and find someone better suited to showbiz (and humanity).

Oh, yeah -- did I mention Ratner's the producer of the Oscars???

Hosted by Eddie Murphy?

I smell a turd.

No longer will they joke that this is the Gay Olympics.

It was a way for the Oscars to dump Eddie Murphy as host without him having a hizzy fit all over the networks. Dumping Ratner because of his 'F' word remark is bogus and redundant as it comes from the same group who couldn't bring themselves to give Best Picture to Brokeback Mountain. The Oscars are so tired that Kim Kardashian will be the biggest star on the red carpet.

Well hip-hooray for today's news that Eddie Murphy has bailed as host of the Oscars!  That whole "package deal" thing smelled to high heavens from the get-go.  The Academy's publicity machine foisted that one on everyone with the assumption that the stupid ol' public could be fooled into believing that Eddie Murphy was still a "hot property" who could bring some sort of A-list luster to the proceedings.  Seems to me that Murphy hasn't been on ANYONE'S "A-list" since Reagan was in office.  And the charming and always lovely Brett Ratner sure ripped his own lid off, exposing what a first-rate, clueless shithead he is.  Clearly, he's living in some sort of testosterone-filled bubble, thinking that he could still use the word "fag" blithely.  Watching him go down is a lovely turn of events.  Putting two known homophobes at the helm of the OSCARS, for chrissake?  That's like putting Richard Simmons in charge of a NASCAR rally.

Dang, he was fired!  I soooooo wanted someone during the Oscar rehearsals to just not bother showing up, and then telling Ratner, "But you said rehearsals were for fags!"

Hooray - he quit....or was fired. Maybe class will return to hollywood. For men like me, of a different era, he represents everything I detest. Uncouth, trashy, foulmouthed, physically un-attractive, and straight ! How could anyone think he would carry on the great tradition of thegayest night of the year. It's as if they chose Ryan Murphy, to produce the Olympics ! I'm relaxing now, in my yellow blazer, and Gucci loafers, anticipating the show again. Maybethey'll even get my dear Liza to sing a song ,or two. Bravo !Vicente M.

I think as usual the gays overreacted.  The guy made a silly remark.  So what?  Grow a set and move on.

That's the same thing you said about Tracy Morgan's horrible "comedy." If someone said the N word or the K word to a room of assembled press, I wonder if you'd be so generous to them.

Anyway, Brett Ratner is now officially out as Oscar producer, thankfully. Let's hope Eddie Murphy--who was Brett's choice for host and who costars in Brett's currently underperforming film comedy--will be the next one out.

Words do have impact. Grow some ovaries.

How do we know Bruce Vilanch won't be involved again? Doesn't he write it every year? If so, I feel sorry for him.

I think the whole things a giant conspiracy by James Franco and Anne Hathaway.  After 30 seconds of Brett Rattner's Oscars, we'll probably even be missing them.

Brett Ratner makes Michael Bay seem like a nice fella with merely misdirected repressed boyhood fantasies.

This is where all the "frat-boy" comedies of the past few years leads...and then the ladies jump on the shit-wagon as well.

I detest Brett Ratner and feel bad that the Oscars will most likely suck this year.  I miss Bruce Vilanch already.

This is all so gross and it's the opposite of what the Oscars should represent. Bring back the days of Whoopi or Ellen hosting.

"There isn't a prejudiced bone in his body." But I bet other bones have been up there.
