The Dumbest Thing I've Read About Occupy Wall Street

Categories: Activism

220px-Wallst14occupy.jpg

Trolling the gossip boards as I'm wont to do for a living, I came across the dumbest of many idiotic anonymous comments about Occupy Wall Street, the growing grassroots movement that takes aim at the corruption in our financial system and the way it's wreaked havoc on Americans' well being.

The commenter had the nerve to dredge up the lazy, old, pathetic barb:

"Why don't they just get a job?"

On reading this, my jaws dropped along with my chins.

Doesn't this dumbfuck realize that these people are protesting because you can't get a job?

Aren't they aware that unemployment is soaring despite various cosmetic ways to try to bring it down and that massive joblessness, foreclosures, and homelessness have spurred this angry activist reaction as thousands scream for their right to stay alive?

And that no one would spent their lives camped out in a freezing pup tent and marching through the streets yelping for a more responsible economy if they could sit in a plush office and rack up some cash?

Get a life.

I believe there is a legitimate concern by many of the OWS participants about  "run-away" capitalism. Without sufficient checks and balances imposed on our economic system and fair taxation, human greed will continue to widen the chasm between the  super wealthy one percent and the ninety nine  percent of the  rest of us. Among other assaults on the working class, there is currently an agenda lead by the Republican right wing sector to attack unions that represent State and Federal public employees. They want to squeeze  out of public employee workers' salaries even more money in order to reduce Federal and State deficits, deficits  for which these working class people are not responsible. They advocate that middle class workers make financial sacrifices so that the very wealthy individuals and corporations may continue to pay less than their fare share of taxes on their huge investment income. However, it appears to me that many of the protestors have joined in for the fun of it. I can imagine the typical dialogue between two young fun seekers, one an OWS protestor (call him A) and the other yet to join the movement (call him B). A says to B: "Did you hear about the protest down near Wall Street, man? "B says to A: "No dude. What are they protesting about?" A  says to B: "A lot of cool things, man. Just make a sign and join us. We can camp out. Hey, there's a  lot of hot chicks around. And get this, there's free music  entertainment  too."B  says to A:  "Cool, dude!"There should be no entertainment, just marches! The disruption to residents and businesses affected by the movement can only be justified where there is a legitimate cause prompting an earnest  protest. Unfortunately, too many of those in the present movement are merely rebels without a cause, which present a detriment to the goals sought by those who are serious participants.

You might want to consider that people of the previous generation, myself included, graduated college into unemployment circumstances similar to, or even worse (1981-1983) than, the current numbers. The difference is many of us did not believe that our degree entitled us to the job of our choice. We took employment we quite possibly loathed, in hope that something better came along. Granted, the "get a job" retort is oversimplified, but the sight of watching those who can apparently afford to chill in a Park for a couple months with the delusion they will change policy, can grate on the nerves. Especially when you look at the current unemployment numbers by job sector. College grads have suffered the least by far, yet these Occupiers seem to believe they deserve the most.

I understand the wallstreet is suppose to be a symbol of the financial market, however it would be more productive to protest the corporate offices on Park Ave, where the CEO of the banks are located.

In middle-class conervative vernacular, telling someone to "get a job" is reserved for able-bodied beggars or lazy, self-pitying, look-to-gov't for help types or welfare live-off gov't types. However since the occupy Wall Street fiasco it's scope has expanded to spoiled-20-somethings, anarchists, malingerers and professional trouble makers. It is totally appropriate and right on the money to thell someone of that ilk to "GET A JOB".

How come there are 20 million spanish speaking illegal aliens in usa working----and sending extra money home to mexico?!

Send all the illegal aliens back to mexico----then there would be 20 million jobs for citizens.

Oh Mr. Impatient the first president to be a communist  was a jerk named Richard Milhous Nixon. He and his buddy Mao Tse-tung. And ever since the rich have been communist collaborators, conspirators, and business associates. Who devotedly aid and abet communism, by out -souring WE THE  AMERICAN PEOPLES JOBS, to communist slave labor. And who is doing this? The greedy rich. And thier right-wing nut republican collaborators, coconspirators, and business associates. Thank you President Milhous, and the greedy rich that seem to be always calling the kettle black.Your day will come soon. For the scripture said "That the first shall be last, and the last shall be first. The shit is about to hit the fan. I just hope it"s doe"s not hit the fan dancer. She is just trying to make aliving! Atto Mr. Impatient! You haven"t seen anything yet. When a man is jobless, homelless, hungry. He doe's not have much or nothing to lose. Activism is what America needs! Read Benjamin Franklin"s book 'Fart Proudly.' And then go out and do it right in the face of the socalled UPPER CRUST faces!

And we all see just how effective the occupiers are as they have accomplished so much.  They've managed to spread disease, sexually violate one another, and show what a classy group they are by defecating on our streets.  And oh yeah, let's not leave out the murder.  Even the homeless have enough sense to say enough is enough.  CHANGE for change's sake is not always a good thing.  Obama money was mailed and is now spent - who's going to send a check now?  People had better wake up and realize that the people that can write the checks are the business owners.

Well maybe it's time to take the check-books off the greedy rich who out-sourc our jobs to the communist slave labor! So that they can maximize thier quarterly profits for thier chech-books sake.Maybe it's time for tit for tat!

The comment doesn't surprise me.  We have a society that has not only grown more intellectually lazy where too many people who should know better buy into the right wing media "blame the victim" cant, but more callous as well.

Maybe the Village Voice could deliver some free copies to the protestors...there are 1,650 listings in the classifieds on the backpage and 2 at the VV!

Haven't heard the term "anti American" since the 1950s, when anyone who challenged the way our country is run was considered a Communist. Sad that "Impatient" has brought it back.

No, they're protesting because they're anti-capitalist, anti-private-property-right, anti-American, violent Marxist a*holes.  And so are all of you at the Voice.  Why don't you people get REAL jobs?
