It was a 1980s record-release party for the glittery superstar on the Intrepid (which they generously allowed me on, despite "don't ask, don't tell.")

I was terrified to meet Miss Ross because she was my longtime idol, and, besides, I'd heard about what a weirdo she can be.

You know, "Don't talk to her, don't look at her, don't call her Diana, don't even breathe the same oxygen."

But as I sweatingly pondered how to get up the nerve to make an introduction, she came up to me!

"Hi, I'm Diana Ross!" she said, which probably shouldn't have been that earthshaking since that indeed is her name.

But I nearly fell overboard.

I guess she can be very nice to press people at her own party.

We had a delightful chat, and the result was captured in the photo that appeared in the above invite for a party celebrating the launch of this column!

Also on the invite (in addition to strange pieces of tape): Me and Sylvia Miles; me and David Bowie; me and Nona Hendryx.

God, my life is dolce!

As a bonus, here's an old club invite:

Miss Ross is a very nice Lady. I met her on stage, in Rochester, NY. "I Want Muscles Tour". She was very nice and patient with me. I was very nervous, and she knew it, and put her arms around me, which relaxed me. I will always love this Lady. A true professional...a great entertainer. A once in a lifetime lady....She is finally gettting her long overdue Award....A Lifetime Emmy...

I saw Ms. Ross in the 80's at what used to be the Golden Nugget in AC. Front row seats. She came to the end of the stage and said to me, "Is that a gun in your pocket, or you just happy to see me?" I almost passed out. Great show! But actually it was the guy I was with that night who I was happy to see!

Beyonce is morphing into the second coming of Miss Ross (ask former Destiny's Child members Farrah Franklin, Letoya Luckett [who's had a decent solo career], and Latavia Robertson and they'll tell you horror stories about Ms. Knowles and her family)

the fact that you got to meet Nona Hendryx of Labelle though... so jealous

Oh quit it with the casting of Flo and Mary as victims of Diana.

I love Diana. I saw her live in Sydney, right up the front and she was fantastic and seemed like a nice lady.

I still listen to the CHIC version of her incredible 1980 album 'Diana'.

I think it should be, "David Bowie and I", or  "David Bowie and Myself" or" David Bowie and me"?

God I hate Diana Ross. The projects girl who now does not allow the maid to look at her. When she was on Oprah her new implant teeth were so large she had trouble speaking.Ok so I don't like her.!

I remember asking what the next single off her album would be. She said she wasn't sure. I said, "I hope it's 'Missing You,' " the pretty ballad about the loss of Marvin Gaye. She said that was a very big possibility. When it was indeed released as the next single, I deludedly convinced myself it was because I had mentioned it to her!

Missing You was originally scheduled to be the lead single off Swept Away. Then, Missing You by John Waite came out and it was decided to not have 2 songs with the same name vying for playlist adds at the same time, so the title song was released first. Both singles from the gold album succeeded in hitting #1 on various Billboard charts.

She was a big - and old - enough star even then to play coy about not knowing what her next career move would be. She dangled the enticement of letting you guess what must had been already planned even before the recording sessions began - the hits-plus-filler formula albums that divas like her could afford to indulge in, so that any single listen would instantly alert DJs and audiences to the standouts. And sweet innocent thang that you were, you took the bait.
