That's the message of this Observer article by Daniel D'Addario, which points to the way camp came out of the closet, became self-conscious, stopped being an in-joke, and just ain't campy anymore.

I'm quoted, of course, along with the late Susan Sontag ... and this is all that really matters ... the fabulous Raquel Welch!

With that lineup, maybe camp is already coming back again!

I'm pointing at 2009 as the year camp died: then-newcomers Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Adam Lambert, and Ke$ha all had singles on the charts, Jersey Shore premiered, Sarah Palin was on the news 24/7...

Boy, was that a long article. I'm not sure that it required so much analysis. Camp is certainly not dead. It's just changed. There are those who may THINK they know camp but they're wrong.

Michael, your piece today featuring Mike Diamond's videos qualify as good camp--at least in my opinion! Camps gone mainstream, but we'll always know the real thing when we see it. "Oh Blanche...ya know we got rats in the cella?"

You're so right to say there's always been camp but it's just out of the closet now.

Glee premiered, the Kardashians got their first spinoff show on E! (even though they had been on the network since '07)...

Susan Sontag is a great anti-American.
