Maude Is Back, On The Antenna Channel!

Antenna is channel number 166 on my dial, but it's well worth the nosebleed.

It's a treasure trove of old TV gems that fills the void left by the rerun channels that have horrifyingly moved up to '80s fare.

Antenna resurrects the salty days of the small-screen's most arrestingly iconographic figures in their most shameless grandeur.

Not just Bea Arthur as that anything but tranquilizin', right-on Maude -- which in itself is a retro marvel -- but also Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Jack Benny, Dennis the Menace, Burns and Allen, and so much more.

This will sound way more enticing if I leave out the fact that they also regularly show Three's Company and Too Close for Comfort, so I'm not gonna mention that, OK?

Anyway, Antenna is worth it alone for the Hitchcock Presents with froggy-voiced Hermione Gingold as a nutty lady who is mistaken for a nanny arriving to do her duty, so she simply takes the job and causes all sorts of havoc.

And the one with Sydney Pollack (yes, that Sydney Pollack) as a camp counselor who messes with the sculptures of the kid from A Thousand Clowns, to eerie effect.

And did I mention the hunky shirtless guy in McHale's Navy, starring Ernie Borgnine?

Put your Antenna on, people!

But why does no one show The Mary Tyler Moore Show anymore?

This is criminal!

Ro-o-ob!!!

I have a small broadcast TV that picks up the free digital broadcast signals; you have you contort yourself and pray while moving the antenna, but the picture is like fuckin buttah when it locks in...I receive this network and several other great ones and it's all free! I LOVE my free digital Broadcast TV signals!!

"It's a treasure trove of old TV gems that fills the void left by the re-run channels that have horrifyingly moved up to 90's fare." Fixed. 80s sitcoms were still fine, it's the 90s that sucked.

I disagree. Nothing is worse than Cosby, Family Ties, Full House, Who's The Boss?, Facts of Life, etc.

Antenna TV is available in the New York TV viewing area over the air on WPIX 11.4, of which can be found on Time Warner 166, Cablevision 114, Comcast 252, Verizon FiOS 465, RCN 22, and Charter 244. It is not available on DirecTV, Dish Network, or AT&T U-Verse.

maybe this will motivate the idiots who run the studios to release the rest of Maude on DVD.

and how about showing Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman as well as the Mary Tyler Moore Show?  Could be a real "Mary" network!

Weekends are fun on this channel.  You get a fill of "Gidget" "The Flying Nun" "The Monkees" and "The Partridge Family".  What a great way to stay bundled up and warm on a cold afternoon.

Yes, I know. I was making a joke. I know every syllable of both shows.

As a mere lamb growing up, I distinctly remember this memorable line from one of the "Maude" episodes:  "Walter, you son of a bitch!"

You just gave me a big childhood flashback.  I remember watching that episode, where Maude catches Walter cheating on her and said that line.  My Cathoic father almost had a meltdown.  He ran over and shut the TV off and banned us from ever watching that show again.  I had to sneak into the basement and get childish delight out of seeing this forbidden filth.  That was pretty racy stuff in 1974!

Well, at the time it was a groundbreaking show from Norman Lear (All in the Family) and it dealt with topical, potentially racy issues. Maude was a shoot-from-the-hip lady who took no prisoners. She trailblazed. And great theme song!

Maude is before my time so I tried watching it to GET it. I don't get it.

Michael,

I'm surprised!  I thought you were ahead of the curve!  "Maude" has been on Antenna TV since January 2011, when the station launched on digital TV sets......then  picked up byTime-Warner in mid-2011

Well, I haven't always had as many channels as I have now, and I'm also incredibly busy going to movies, plays, and nightclubs. So sue me!!!!! I thought I'd share what has become a recent pleasure of mine.

Just teasing you!

FYI, this best thing about this station is that they occasionally will run late-night bizarro movies, like "HEAD", which is the infamously awful 60s acid-trip flick featuring "The Monkees".

Kent McCord was such a stiff but he aways gave me a stiffie too.

Yes...that's a wonderful "default" channel for when there's nothing else on (like, 22 hours a day).  My favorite is "Adam 12," since Kent McCord (when the show first ran in the 60's) was one of the actors that either made me first know I was gay--or actually MADE me gay (the other was Chad Everett)!  Even at age 8, I sensed he was unnaturally hot and was a terrible, terrible actor---but it didn't matter.  Antenna is showing it almost every day now...

Tangentially, I saw your new commercial, Michael, for BoConcept.  They showed it on A&E during "Hoarders".  I thought that was rather ingenious ad placement!

I love it! Thanks for telling me, Gregorama. I always wanted to be on Hoarders and now I am!!

I saw the Sydney Pollack one and thought he was kind of hot!

By the way, how bizarre was the MTM tribute at the Sag awards?

Thanks for the tip! I'll see if I have this on my dial, but I have a  feeling no.
