No Wikipedia Today In Protest!

You may have noticed that there's no way to go to Wikipedia today and do all your convenient research.

That's because they've yanked the site for 24 hours in protest over the possible passing of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act.

The Wiki folks say that if passed, the act "would seriously damage the free and open internet, including Wikipedia."

Translation, please?

Well, as someone on the gay gossip site datalogue.com posits:

"It's the corporate world trying to control everything, including internet sites and what can be posted.

"It's a ludicrous invasion of rights, all in the name of supposed copywright protection, which is bullshit.

"It's an Orwellian attempt at control."

And I'm so against Internet censorship that I even let the word "bullshit" get in there.

But a rep from the Center for Individual Freedom says the legislation is actually good because it "addresses the threat of foreign piracy and it's unfortunate that so many opponents have resorted to inaccurate and flatly dishonest claims in an attempt to derail it."

Eek. Should I have censored that?

like someone commented: try blocking youtube for 24 hours instead (which will happen soon).

overhead costs for the music industry should have gone down since there is no real material to produce and distribute, anymore. it´s all done through a wire, today.

as the music and film industry has been ripping off artists for years!where does all that money go to for all those billie holiday recordings? she had no family when she died. the music industry started to get out of control when they went after the cassette business in the 80-ties.there are only 4 record companies left in the world that control all aspect of the recording industry.

Listen Don't be in the middle. Be for Stopping SOPA.  There are laws on the books to stop piracy. Don't shut down twitter and Google for what people post. The law is way over reaching. Its such bull shit that this do-nothing congress is so close to passing this crap legislation.  Check out my video. markatlarge . com   http://markatlarge.com/sopa-mu...

I'm all for internet openness but I'm not for ripping off people's work, so I'm a little in the middle here.

When Comcast and Time Warner are for something (SOPA)..watch out!  "Piracy" is just the codeword for "protecting our dominance/monopoly.

P.S. - Ripping off people's work existed probably after the first cave painting...
