"Steve McQueen Was A Fake" Says Movie Costar

Categories: Film

In his memoir The Garner Files, movie/TV icon James Garner has this to say about motorcycle maniac Steve McQueen:

"He didn't like anything. Like Brando, he could be a pain in the ass on the set.

"Unlike Brando, he wasn't an actor. He was a movie star, a poser who cultivated the image of a macho man.

"Steve wasn't a bad guy. I think he was just insecure."

Garner concedes that Steve did well in The Great Escape, which they starred in together, "but you could always see him acting. That's the kiss of death as far as I'm concerned."

Worst of all, McQueen was a Republican!

Still, the two actors were friends for many years and Garner even admits to a twinge of jealousy when McQueen somehow made it onto Nixon's enemies list.

Nixon hated a Republican? Maybe McQueen's politics were just another pose.

Gigi,

What did Steve McQueen throw onto James Garners lawn that use to make Garner angry?

as I read all this? I"m sick of people who write books? that go's for the Garner book! Jesus, my uncle was a 2 time Oscar winner and a Tony winner and my godmother was Judy Garland and 'yes' I knew Steve very well! he would come up to Montecito (Santa Barbara) to visit my uncle from Malibu or Santa Paula all the time from where he actually lived from 75 untill his death at the airport he owned in Santa Paula. My uncle made the Magnificent Seven with him and Steve remained really good friends, in fact Steve didn't like my uncle at first! but he told me he really respected my uncle and considered him a great friend!! here's the truth I worked for Steve for 2 1/2 years at the airport and he was my friend and when I was 10 years old he bought me a Yamaha dirt bike for my B-Day and I still have a photo of that day that I still carry in my wallet as a reminder! folks he trusted me and I knew all of his personal life info!  I wouldn't even consider writing a book about his private life. Steve had many cars and planes and he flew all the time and he would drive around in his VW bus or his 1/2 ton beat up pick- up truck and drink beers, he trusted me because I came from wealth, but I was a down to earth college kid who surfed and got high and had no agenda? plus, my uncle was a big star and people that are quote stars!! don't interest me in the least? because they are people! regular folks are what life is about? my uncle told me 90% of all acting is observing and reacting! thats why Steve was so good!! he was a normal guy who could build that into his characters and in turn use his actions and observations to become that character movements, eye's,expressions and be cool by not acting! like in "Bullet" he didn't have a lot of dialogue! Steve involved the character into who he was! the character wasn't him he was the character and he looked cool doing it. Eastwood is the best with his facial features and expressions and says the least amount of dialogue most of the time and that makes you wonder and brings you closer to the character. Steve was a mechanic at heart! he was a pro -union guy and I loved cleaning and working on his planes.

McQueen's best performance was in The Sand Pebbles which was his Apocalypse Now set-in 1920's revolutionary china also starring Richard Attenborough & Candice Bergen.

HUH? How on earth could you possibly come to that kind of conclusion after reading what I wrote? I guess that explains why your user name is "Miss Understood".

I liked him in Papillon.  To me that was his best role.

does anyone remeber the interview--donohue, perhaps--where james garner´s wife was explaining to the audience--he was there, too--how he didn´t like homos? he said it himself on tv.

republicanism is in vogue. who isn´t republicvan these days since pres. obam has taken office. from white gays to white straights hate is all the rage, today, in america. t-dance, t-party, t-rooms, anyone?still, mcqueen had great taste in automoblies!

The McQueen's lived next door to us for many years. My Dad thought of Steve as a kind of naughty little brother. They were friends and neighbors. We recently had dinner with his ex-wife and she confirmed that Steve was not affiliated with either political party. She said, and I quote "Steve was nothing" So, I can't figure out why people keep to referring to Steve as a Republican (as if that mattered anyway) ... My Dad's best friend from childhood is a Republican. So???  This book, "The Garner Files" is not about politics, sex, religion or any other hot button topic. It is simply an open and honest account of my Father's life, as he rememers it  ;)

Yes. That was the real Bullitt.

According to a recent biography, the young McQueen was a rent boy, too.

Does anyone other than me remember the scandalous (then) full page photo of Stevie sprawled spread-eagle on a bed with nothing on but his underwear, a semi-tumescent member clearly, impudently visible?

I always sensed that like james Dean, McQueen was a fake and a poseur--a wannabe Brand without the chops. I felt the same way about Dennis Hopper. Shoot me.

LOLOLOLOLOL!You people are so funny!

Dear Trolls,That is the funniest thing I think I have ever read! ROTFLMAOMy Mother has never been on any TV show except "This is Your Life" in 1959. Many of my parents friends are gay. In fact, he totally financially supported a gay African American artist, Richmond Barthé, for many years until his death. And so on.......THANKS FOR THE LAUGHS! PEACE OUT ;)

So, Gigi, the Republican party is evil.  You may know an otherwise nice person who is a Republican, but whether they are aware of it or not, they are assisting in a war against human rights.

Well, your father referred to him as a Republican.

No, but I wish I did. Love to have seen that photo. And glad to know that, like Thomas Jane, he did what he had to do!

I meant 'Brando,' of course.

By the way, the new Steve McQueen (director of Shame) is a fake too, lol.

maybe, it wasn´t the same wife at the time. this was either during the 70-ties or 80-ties this television show interview. i don´t remember if it was donahue, oprah, or whoever. lt was along time ago!i remember clearly the show. the woman, whoever it was, was explaining how your father was uncomfortable being around gay people (men-- i suppose) at the time. the woman was explaining to the audience she had a few talks with james to explain to him there was nothing wrong with gay people, etc. he himself did say he was, at the time, uncomfrotable being around gay people. perhaps, not now but then yes! he said it himself on the show. plus, you can see it in his body language. i can tell you why i remember this particular program and interview. the woman didn´t have an issue with gay people who was doing most of the talking during the interview, anyway.your turn.

No, that is the Democratic Party, with their efforts to make as many people dependent on government "assistance" as possible, all the while convincing the new slaves of the welfare state that their masters are helping them. This is how the left maintains it's power. You are the ones waging war against human rights.

No, that's the Demorats, with their statist welfare-slave state. Idiot. Republicans empower people.

Yes, and my response is that YES it DOES matter.  I don't know what you mean by "My Dad's best friend from childhood is a Republican. So???" but if you mean that being a Republican is not a big deal I disagree. It's a very big deal.

In America many of us aspire to not judge people by their ethnicity, the color of their skin, their gender, or sexual orientation because these things don't matter.  They have nothing to do with a person's character. We should however judge people by their words and actions. Political affiliations fall under that category. Political affiliations affect the future of safely of all of us, of our environment, and our decedents.

Bing
Bing

Right. So if you're gonna say "I can't figure out why people keep referring to Steve as a Republican," now you have your answer. It's as they remember it. (Or maybe they simply read your dad's book.)
