Every Movie Judy Garland Ever Made In 14 Minutes

Categories: Judy Garland

From her first entrance (in The Big Revue) to her final scene (in I Could Go on Singing).

Not surprisingly, this was put together by Mark Milano, who also did those wonderful compilations revealing who dubbed which major stars in various movie muscals.

It's quite an education in the evolution of Judy-ism as she progresses from a darling little Gumm to an adolescent belter to a full-grown heartbreaker to a shadowy and way-too-thin genius.

Watch as the legendary mannerisms grow and grow!

She'll sing 'em all, and we'll stay all night!

"Pepe" was Cantinflas' follow-up film to "Around the World in 80 Days." Columbia Pictures wanted to make him an American star. So they bolstered the film with a bunch of cameos by as many stars of the day as possible. Judy was about to start her 1960s comeback, but was still very overweight. I think that's the reason she's not physically in the film. But she was another name to put on the guest star list and the song won an Academy Award nomination.

It's by composer Andre Previn and lyricist Dory Langdon, later Mrs. Andre Previn. Together, they  wrote the songs for "Valley of the Dolls" and "Inside Daisy Clover," before Mia Farrow came calling to steal Mrs.Previn's husband. And Dory Previn wrote a song about that, too.

By now she was writing lyrics AND music and made some albums.

The only words-and-music song of hers that I remember began:

Mary Cecilia BrownCame to town on the Malibu bus.She climbed to the top of the Hollywood signAnd with the smallest possible fuss,She jumped from the letter "H" 'cause she could not become a star. She died in less than a minute and a half'She looked a bit like Hedy Lamarr."

Dory Previn died just recently and her New York Times obit noted that her husband was an artist named Joby Baker, who was formerly the actor Joby Baker, who appeared in lots of 60s-70s TV and movies, including several starring Elvis.

1929 Bubbles Judy looks startlingly like Ruth Gordon.

Now, I'm a great big Judy queen, and it amazes me how many of these I've never even heard of:  Thoroughbreds Don't Cry?  Listen, Darling?  If I Forget You?  Who knew?

And my God, The Harvey Girls is a pretty, pretty picture...

The "Ziegfeld Follies" number is "The Great Lady Gives an Interview," all about a movie diva being interviewed by "the gentlemen of the press" about her next role -- "Madame Crematon," the inventor of the safety pin. Roger Edens and Kay Thompson wrote it for Greer Garson, who played "Madame Curie" and Garson hated it, big time. So Judy got to do it and was brilliant.

All I can say about this compilation is what director Charles Walters said after filming Judy singing "Friendly Star" in "Summer Stock": "Can someone give me a towel? I've just cum all over myself."

Merci beaucoup, Messrs. Milano and Musto!

Thanks for debuting my latest clip, Michael!  And thanks for all the kind words from viewers.

My boyfriend also suggested that I include "My Own Tree" (he insisted that I switch "Look for the Silver Lining" to "Who?" because he wanted Liza to make a cameo), but using VOTD would have meant closing with her audio and her wardrobe test, which would make for a flat ending, I think.  You can hear her dub for Susan Hayward at my other channel:

And I'm thrilled that finally it's someone ELSE who's doing an exhaustive compilation, only to have someone go "But what about...?"

I believe there is only audio on that, no footage.

This is amazing--and it includes her cut stuff from "Annie Get Your Gun" (and her singing in "Pepe," which I didn't even know about.)

What is that number from Ziegfeld Follies of 1946??? I never saw it before.

And she never won an Oscar! (except for the special one for Wizard of Oz).

Thanks!! I worship Dory, not only for Valley of the Dolls and Inside Daisy Clover, but for writing the theme song to Daddy's Gone A-Hunting.

she was cheated out of an Oscar for A Star Is Born, because the president of the AMPAS was also the producer of The Country Girl.
