The Supremes' "I'm Livin' In Shame" Sung By Me

Categories: Musto on Musto

Some pounds ago, I used my finest method acting skills to interpret Diana Ross songs as the lead singer of the Must, my '80s band looking back at '60s Motown hits complete with sparkly outfits and lavish arm gestures.

And one of my most out-there diva moments happened at the Gabriel Rotello-produced revue Downtown Dukes & Divas.

I sang "I'm Livin' in Shame," the supremely campy Supremes song in which Diana laments the fact that she was ashamed of her poor mom her whole life even though Mama made jam all day and worked so hard, "down on her knees, always trying to please."

I had a blast doing that song with rolling eyes and sardonic eyebrows -- and wait till you see the telegram moment.

Heartbreaking!

Thanks to Snooky & Tish for backup and Nelson Sullivan for documenting the whole thing.

Finally a YouTube clip I'm not livin' in shame about.

Michael, now we know why your eyeglasses are so large, it's b/c of all the eye shadow and mascara that got into your eyes in your disco days. Ruins the eyes, dear.

I think "I'm Livin' in Shame" came after "Love Child," the Supremes' entry into social realism, complete with Miss Ross wearing an Afro, a skimpy T shirt, and a frown. It was a song about not wanting to have a baby born out of wedlock--like she was. "Shame" tried to be as searingly real, but it just came off campy and silly. You did a great version of it!!
