Meryl Will Lose Again, And Other Fail-Safe Oscar Predictions

Meryl-Streep-as-Margaret--007.jpg

Check out my new column, in which I detail my exclusive, highly knowledgeable takes on who will win the major categories at the Oscars this Sunday, causing them to exude a kindly glow at least through Tuesday.

Not among the victorious for the kazillionth time in a row is my gal Meryl Streep.

She won two Oscars back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, only to get continually kicked to the curb for someone newer (though to be fair, she did once lose once to the older Helen Mirren -- Meryl loses to everybody!).

Meryl is always the best in any category -- and this year she dominated a so-so film and elevated it with her genius -- but there are some strong (if ridiculous) reasons Oscar won't hand her any more golden boys.

You'll learn about all that, as well as who'll nab the other acting awards, plus the coveted Best Picture honor.

I even address the Best Song category, if only to say, "Throw it away!"

But don't throw out the link to my column. It's pure gold.

And here am I spewing my views to GoldDerby.com's Tom O'Neil:

Everyone is so dead set on the fact that Viola Davis won the SAG so there's no way she could lose the Oscar to Meryl Streep. But, since the SAG Awards began in 1994, they have not chosen the correct Oscar winner in the lead female category 5 times.  Since 1994 when the Globe winner and the SAG winner have been different, EVERY SINGLE TIME, the Golden Globe winner has taken the Oscar...and of those 5 GG/Oscar winners, three have also won the Bafta that year.  Here's how it breaks down:

1994 - Jodie Foster - SAG       Jessica Lange - GG and Oscar

1999 - Annette Benning - SAG       Hilary Swank - GG and Oscar

2002 - Renee Zellweiger - SAG       Nicole Kidman - GG, Oscar and Bafta

2007 - Julie Christie - SAG       Marion Cotillard - GG (lead actress in the Comedy Cat.)                  Oscar and Bafta

2008 - Meryl Streep - SAG       Kate Winslet - GG (for Revolutionary Road)                       Oscar and Bafta (for The Reader)

2011 - Viola Davis - SAG       Meryl Streep - GG and Bafta .....

Anyone else see a pattern here??

Hopefully Meryl will get another one for Supporting one day. They allow older women to win supporting, don't they? (though I do remember Lauren Bacall and Gloria Stuart getting kicked to the curb.)
