Octavia Spencer: What Do We Know About Her?

She's the favorite to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Minny in The Help, so it's only natural we learn a little more about the woman, right?

Well, she's 39, 5'2", and hails from Montgomery, Alabama.

Her mother worked as a maid.

She got her break in 1995's A Time To Kill with Sandra Bullock, then went on to do LOTS of TV and movie work, hardly stopping for a second.

Remember her as Constance Grady on Ugly Betty?

If not, Octavia was also Twila in Big Momma's House, and she was hilarious in Bad Santa, but she also has bizarre credits like "Streetwalker" in The Nines (2007) -- also starring fellow nominee Melissa McCarthy -- and Rochelle in Herpes Boy (2009), all on the bumpy road to the Oscars.

Coming up for Octavia is the film of The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife, a campy romp that she originated onstage.

Also Smashed, a hit at Sundance just recently, in which she's an AA sponsor trying to get white people back on track.

And Untitled Diablo Cody Project with diverse co-stars like Julianne Hough, Holly Hunter, and Russell Brand.

The description of that one? "After surviving a plane crash, a young conservative woman suffers a crisis of faith."

I bet Octavia serves her some very memorable pie.

More power to her but I hope Hollywood doesn't reward playing a maid in 2012.

From a Facebook friend:

"Mostly she's played wisecracking ladies, but on ER, she played a woman who wanted an abortion because her baby was a girl."

She's also in the elevator scene in Being John Malkovich. She teaches John Cusack's character Craig Schwartz how to press the buttons to got up to and open the door with a crowbar to the 7 1/2 floor. Watch at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Loved her in The Help! Never saw her in anything before but glad she's shining so brightly these days.

Thanks for giving some background on her. Funny the skinny white girls like Jessica Chastain seem to get more press.

The skinny white girls just seem to have more self-respect.  Seems they find satisfaction in working rather than finishing a large bag of Doritos.
