Raquel Welch Was Hot For Costar Who Turned Out To Be Gay

At her Film Society of Lincoln Center series on Saturday night, the ever luscious Raquel Welch admitted that on the set of the 1966 sci-fi film Fantastic Voyage, she developed the hots for Stephen Boyd, her hunky, dimpled co-star (known for the Oscar winner Ben-Hur and the non-Oscar-winner The Oscar).

When Raquel invited Boyd into her room for a drink, Boyd replied:

"I'd like to tell you a little story that was told to me by John Gielgud.

"I hope you'll think about it and get my drift.

"An actress is a little bit more than a woman," he related, pregnant with meaning, "and an actor is a little bit less than a man."

"I thought, "What's he saying?'" remembered Raquel, who was utterly stymied at the time.

Then it hit her:

"He's not interested in me! I am the wrong sex!"

Raquel then cutely said that she wished she hadn't told that story because Boyd is no longer here to give his side of things, but WTF, we always knew he was a friend of Dorothy (if not a lover of Raquel).

And I'm a little pissed that he thought being gay made you less than a man!

It's actually a fantastic voyage.

I kinda love that for Raquel what was all wrong was that she was the wrong gender and not that Stephen did not find her desirable.

"Is there anything so sad as unrequited love?" - Messala (Stephen Boyd) to Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston); dialog by Gore Vidal.

One more just to make sure. Ben-Hur: "May God grant me vengeance! I will pray that you live until I return!" Messala [raised eyebrow]: "Return?"

Oh thank gaawad Boyd isn't around anymore...It would've been muy awkward if he'd shown up in a Raquel Welch™ wig.

In the interest of queer consensus, is not Friends of Dorothy really meant as friends of Dorothy Parker?  One of my qualities is I do not mind being wrong in the search for knowlege in this milky way.  And we can surely be friends with two Dorothys, non?

Gore knew exactly what he was doing, he found the film lacking something beyond the chariot race so he made up an idea in his head about Messala and Ben-Hur being ex-lovers.  Wyler knew and only approved because only he, Stephen, and Gore knew while Heston was in the dark.  Stephen acted the subtext to pieces and Heston was just trying to act stoic.

Really?  It looks kind of tiny.  I was thinking he looked cute, but probably had a tiny goozle.

I always assumed it meant Dorothy Gale.

And Heston won the Oscar and Boyd wasn't even nominated.

Heston was just trying to act like he was acting, while posing.
