Should "Under God" Be In The Pledge Of Allegiance?

Some parents don't think so, and they're suing a school district in Acton, Massachusetts, over it.

And I think they're right.

Infusing a worship of God into group pronouncements at school assumes a lot and balances the scales in favor of those who do choose to worship God over those who aren't the least bit interested in it, though they're perfectly responsible Americans anyway.

What if you pray to some other deity?

What if you don't believe in religion at all?

Why should it be forced out of your mouth and into your head?

As the parents' lawyer said about the pledge's phrasing:

"That suggests that people who don't believe in God are less patriotic than others, and that's just not the truth.

"Humanists and atheists are citizens, they pay their taxes, they get good grades."

Yes, they do. I give them an A for effort here.

Oh honestly. Is this really a problem? America promises "freedom of religion" not "freedom from religion. I am currently an atheist. I say currently because I am also a Pisces and I reserve the right to change my mind. You say, "What if?" I say "So what." If you don't want to say the words "under God," don't say them. It's that easy. In grade school, I didn't sing the phrase, "Land where our fathers died..." because I didn't want to put a hex on my father who was still alive. Did my family sue to make the school stop making me sing America the Beautiful? Yeah right. If we got rid of everything that is offensive to anyone, there would be nothing left to call freedom.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931), who was a Baptist minister, a Christian socialist, and the cousin of socialist utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850–1898). It did not  contain "Under God" in the original version. That was added in the 1950s.

Oh, God! Every time you get into the Supreme Being discussion group, there's bound to be trouble.

I still say it because it was "drummed in my dear little ear" all through school.

Then there's "In God We Trust."  Well, some people don't and when they announce it, the  conversational sky comes crashing down on their heads.

Some people actually lobbied for "God Bless America" to replace "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the National Anthem, but the Anthem remained, Kate Smith rolled over in her grave, causing one of the bigger California quakes and that was that.

I'm going to straddle the fence, as I've straddled so many things and say "Deity Optional."

In all new horrifying news, Chris Christie just banned same-sex marriage in New Jersey, after the assembly had passed it. Ugh.

The "under god" insertion came during the red frothing days of the early Eisenhower Administration.  Was rushed through the Congress as was the banishment of the phraseology "French fries" for "liberty fries".  Hilarious for the French with humor is the fact that fries come from Belgium and everyone knows the best come from Amsterdam in a cone mit mayonnaise.  The punch line is that the Pledge itself sprang from an issue of the Boy Scouts of America monthly magazine.  It has no real authenticity.

I know. And kids are reprimanded if they refuse to say it.

Why are we even pledging allegiance at all? Is everyone required to be patriotic?

"Under God" was not even in the original pledge. It was stuck in there in the '50s when we were trying to appear so saintly in the world view. It needs to be taken out, for [BLANK'S] sake.

All you liberal atheists are gonna get it from the big guy upstairs. Just you wait.

A separate topic: I love how MSNBC shitcanned Patrick Buchanan as if they just realized he's racist, homophobic, etc!@!!! Isn't that why they hired him?? Hypocrites.

I agree with the parents! Not sure why that one school district should be target over all the others that do the same thing, but the fight has to start somewhere.

"If you don't want to say the words 'under God', don't say them. It's that easy." Oh, really? Except that kids who refuse to say them have been penalized, ostracized, and punished! You are sadly naive and need to stop endorsing this forced religiosity.

It should be taken out of there. No one should be made to say it or even hear it every day. Unless they're going to add names of every other deity, plus the "no god at all" option.

I agree. Why is it that they always ask "should under God be in the pledge" and they never ask "should the pledge be in the pledge"? The pledge was the origin of the nazi salute and nazi behavior. See the work of Dr. Rex Curry. The pledge caused violence, castrations, even lynchings. It continues to cause bullying. Only the gesture has changed. Stop the Pledge.

No. If we don't believe in God, then there's no heaven or hell for us. Since you buy into it, you're the ones that have to suffer the eternal damnation of hell unless you confess every five minutes. Make that two minutes.

If God is indeed that vindictive, why would anyone want to spend eternity with such an a**hole anyway?

Actually, he might want to confess right now.  I seem to remember pride being a sin. Wulfgar3000, you aren't God; please point out where exactly in the Bible it says that Wulfgar3000 determines who enters the kingdom of heaven or not.  Better apologize to him and hope "He's" not in a bad mood, else you might not be able to pass through the eye of a needle when the time you keep hoping for actually happens.
