Will Octavia Spencer Have A Career?

Categories: Celebs

This ABC News article examines the rough road African-American women have in Hollywood, even when they've won the all-important Oscar.

The piece discusses Jennifer Hudson, Mo'Nique, and Gabe Sidibe (who was nominated) and the challenges they face, despite all the acclaim and hoopla showered on their cinematic achievements.

But the conclusion made by the quoted pundits -- including myself -- is that Spencer has range and talent and has already been working in several media to very palatable effect.

She should be able beat the odds, at least in the kind of character roles she specializes in.

And as I'm quoted as saying, things are already improving for African-American Oscar winners, albeit slowly.

"Minny is a long way forward from Mammy in Gone With the Wind [Oscar winner for 1939]!"

We'll also have to call in the question of talent. Angelina's just got more of it (as well as a short list of other dark-skinned actresses) than Halle B. While we're at it, might as well declare: it's the young Marlon Brando who could have played Cleopatra best!

In Dreamgirls, wasn't the Beyonce character planning to star in  Cleopatra? Thank god that never happened--though the real Beyonce is supposedly doing Star is Born.

Halle won the Oscar then destroyed her career by signing on to do crap like Catwoman. She went for the dough and she lost out.

I think she'll get a lot of work. Gaby Sidibe seems to work steadily.

The camera and the audience love her. That sister is gonna work plenty!

"Character roles" is a bit of a curse, but that's not because she's black. It's because she'd 39 and not svelte.

Look what Hollywood has done to poor Lupe Ontiveros! It's just maid or grandmother, over and over. Sickening. More power to Olivia, and more great roles to actresses of color, PLEASE!

At least Octavia didn't have to sit in a special segregated part of the Oscars, like poor Hattie Mcdaniel did.
