Car-Service Horror Story

When going out of town, I usually book a car service to the airport just to make sure I get there, since a cab isn't always a possibility.

But even with the definite car booking, you'd have more luck hailing a yak these days.

The other day, I booked a Carmel car for 7:35 a.m., so I could make an early flight to Miami.

At 7:20 a.m., the driver called and said some unintelligible things.

I assumed he was saying that he was here, since they usually come 15 minutes early and wait for you.

I replied: "Fine. I'll be down before 7:35."

I went down a few minutes later, and he wasn't there!

I called him back, and he let out some crazed monologue in another language, and I had no idea what he was saying.

Then he hung up on me!

I stood there in the street in abject horror!

As I envisioned my whole glorious weekend falling to ruins because of this maniac, I happened to spot another car-service guy sitting there. He worked for 1-212-777-777, and he had been stood up by a passenger.

So he took me and saved my life!

Thank you, 1-212-777-7777!

Some time later, Carmel called me and apologized, saying they could send another car in five to 10 minutes.

I told them where to go.

Tobe able to avoid any malfunctions in your engine, you must always seeto it to check whether all the tycofuses were okay and is working. And also for thatdisrespectful attendant you could always file a complain about it.

A couple of years ago during a heavy rain when no cabs were available, I took a town car driven by an independent owner who works for himself. He gave me his card and I have used him ever since for the airport and other occasions when I need to hire a car. He has never let me down. If you ever want his info let me know.

When I started coming to New York regularly for my job, I got lucky. I had my hotel recommend a car service.

I got an Ecuadorian gentleman who's picked me up (so to speak) ever since. He recommends -- even gives -- books to me and I met his young son once when I needed the car on a Sunday morning. He was always  there when I've needed transportation, no matter what the hour.

I'm retired now and don't get to NY as often as I used to, but this man always got my NY experiences off to a great start  and ending.

Please. This is the norm with car services. Don't get me started.

I've had problems with the 212-777-7777 service too. Believe me, they're no better than Carmel. You just lucked out with them that morning.

Carmel is the worst. And the coupons are only good if you have the code.
