No Construction At Fire Island Pavilion After All

My source was delirious, maybe from the fresh air.

It's the La Fontaine Building, which includes Sip N Twirl, that is currently being reconstructed after the fire (see below photo).

But the also-burnt-down dance club the Pavilion -- which a source had told me was currently being rebuilt -- is still just sitting there.

The owners say they will create a temporary structure there this year and a permanent one in 2013, though they're obviously not rushing.

And either way, the buzz that the property is for sale remains.

But where will the gays party?

Well, one source says there will be a tented space put up for clubbing.

And that there might be nightly boat shuttles to the Grove so you can keep your Pines share while getting down at the Ice Palace.

Whatever the case, I'm certain that the island will thrive again with lots of reckless hedonism.

I personally am not worried about any of this.

I don't dance.

The infrastructure on fire island is a broken paradigm; built before satellite TV, the internet, netflix, grindr, etc. Twenty years ago there was nothing to do after dark but play cards or go to the bars. Today, that's not the case, and the bars all have to cannibalize each other to survive. I think a smaller venue might make more sense.

First of all, the spelling of LaFountaine is LaFountaine, not the way you have been spelling it. Second of all, as a full time resident and business owner in Fire Island Pines, you have your facts incorrect. Pines Ventures not only owns the site of the Pavilion, but also all the commercial property from where the Pavilion was to and not including the Pines Pantry. So that includes the Canteen Restaurant, a number of commercial stores, the Hotel Ciel and the Blue Whale Restaurant as well as the Pool area. In Mid April they will begin tea dance at the Blue Whale where it has been for the past 45 years. Middle tea will be around the Pool area this Season and high tea will be around the Blue Whale and the Hotel Ciel if a temporary space is not built this season on the Pavilion site. So there will be Low Tea, Middle (pool) Tea and High Tea. Every venue will be open and there will be plenty of options for people to go this Season, including restaurants and bars. If you think that the people in Fire Island Pines are not gearing up for a spectacular season, then you are not aware of the pulse and energy and most of all, the committment of all of us in Fire Island Pines. Remember, we got through the eighties and WE’RE STILL HERE! No fire, no hurricane, no epidemic is going to curtail the positive attitude of everyone here in the Pines. The homeowners, renters and guests in Fire Island Pines are the most resourceful and creative people in the world. No blog gets it!  Jon Wilner

um...they are putting up tents and beach bars for their temporary site and they dont need that ready until after memorial days - 3 months from now.

Remember they put up Pines Party and Ascension in 5 days.  I am not concerned. If it was May 15th that would be one thing but its mid-march. I think the warm weather is getting people confused

Why is this a problem? The drugged out gays would gladly dance on a sand lot if there's a bar and some twinkly lights.

What a sad sight. If they're gonna re-sell it, they really should start re-building it.

No need for the attitude here Jon. Save it for your clients. I suggest people use Pines Harbor Realty; much nicer people.

Agreed, Tim. Jon comes off like a pompous ass. Everyone knows about the other properties owned by the same people. In fact, it's been discussed on this blog. No one ever said those places won't be open. This was simply about the Pavilion. If other places are picking up the slack left by the Pavilion, why didn't Andrew Kirtzman say so when asked for comment originally? There was no answer! I read this blog and it attempted to get the facts. So Jon's main correction here is the spelling of LaFountaine. Pathetic. I'm switching to Pines Harbor realty.
