Rebecca The Musical Is Coming After All

Earlier this year, the musical version of Rebecca put up its Broadway marquee but had to take it down when the full money didn't surface.

Well, one of the stars is telling people it's on again! Mrs. Danvers can sing to paying customers!

They have started rehearsing again, and they plan to take over the Broadhurst Theatre when A Streetcar Named Desire exits.

Yay! A new musical!

Rebecca, a musical? Well if they want hair-raising music, they can always hire Baroness Lloyd Webber. Or just recycle the score of Phantom of the Opera.

Can't wait to see Mrs. Danvers tap dancing and doing Fosse moves -- that was in the movie, right?

Hope Mrs. Danvers gets a big 11 o'clock number:"Rebecca's Underwear Drawer."

I have a program from the '40s, when Diana Barrymore toured in "Rebecca," the play wifh Florence Reed (the original Mother Goddam in the infamous 1926 Broadway hit "The Shanghai Gesture") as Mrs. Danvers and Diana's first husband, Bramwell Fletcher (doncha love that name?) as Maxim De Winter.

Mother Goddam's over--the-top speech "I survived" has been famously used as after-dinner entertainment by director George Cukor and Tennessee Williams.

who'll play Mrs. Danvers?

"In 1940, Margaret Rutherford played the onimous Mrs. Danvers, when Daphne DuMaurier adapted REBECCA for the stage. Rutherford won raves, but the play was forced to close when a bomb, during the Blitz, hit the Queens Theatre where the production was playing."

From my memoir - COLLISION: when reality and illusion collide.

My all time fave movie is Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca.  I think I have seen it 20 times or more.  I hope they do a good job and you betcha' I'll see it!!  Who is in it?  Who plays wife #2 and Mrs. Danvers (Danny)?

I'd check out the show's dreadful, laughable score before shouting "Yay!" (unless you mean it in camp sort of way).

In the tradition of fine musical adaptations of fine motion pictures, I suppose they will burn the house down every performance, 8 times a week?

I love Karen Mason so I am happy to hear about this.

Not sure how great this news is, but you're right, any new musical is a welcome thing.

Maggie was good in a lot of roles, but I remember her as a kind soul type, cup of tea, tabby cat in her lap sort.  Being an actress though, she was probably up to being the sinister old octopus Mrs. Danvers.  I can't imagine anyone topping Judith Anderson!  (she was no doubt a top).
