One of the things I loved about Sade Pendavis is that, even though I'd written about her more than once, she had no idea who I was and would always greet me with "What was the name again?"

Normally that kind of thing would make me crazy, but since so many downtown performers delightfully crawl so far up my butt they come out the other side, it was kind of refreshing (and humbling) to find someone who didn't give a shit.

She was real. And she was polite about it.

But the best thing about Sade was the voice, which gave me chills. And the presence, which added to them.

She would perform with Joey Arias and Raven Oh at the Village speakeasy Bardot in the '90s, and at the Bardot reunions at Indochine until very recently.

And she would wail it out, like a potent mix of Ethel Waters and Gladys Knight.

Her songs weren't always the best -- she'd sometimes do weird album cuts from unexpected artists -- but that was part of her charm, too.

It wasn't cookie-cutter.

And she'd belt the shit out of them, turning them into three-act operas by sheer force of conviction.

When she clicked with a crowd, it was magical -- a soul goddess turning a trendy restaurant into a Harlem ballroom.

She sang, she sweated, we cheered, we wept.

Sade was known from Paris Is Burning, the Wigstock festival, and a Johnny Dynell record, among other credits.

She may not have known who I am, but I knew who she was.

And I'm sorry to report that she's died.

Strangely, no one online will give any details, even when I ask, but whatever the case, she's singing in the Soul Train in the sky.

I would never miss Sade's performance at Wigstock, it was always something that I looked forward to.  We will all miss her as well as all of the other girls who are no longer with us who performed every year at Wigstock. This festival brought out all of NYC's best performers, of course Sade was one of my favorites of all time.

An amazing talent, and one of the nicest people I've ever known or worked with.  I directed a feature that began to play the US and Canadian film festival circuit last year, called "What's the Name of the Dame?"  Sade is very much front and center in our movie, both performing and behind the scenes.  When we traveled around with her doing p.r., she confided many of her health issues. Still, we didn't expect to lose her so suddenly.  I'm stunned today... and deeply saddened.

When I left NYC 10 years ago for greener living, there were very few things that I missed. Mostly people and Sade Pendavis was one of them. In all the 30 years that I lived in Manhattan Sade was always the same to me, kind, sweet hearted and with always something funny to share every time I saw her. She will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to meet her or see her perform. RIP Legend.

I'm told she had several liver transplants and it was all very rough on her and they wanted to repeat the procedure, but she said no, she'd had enough.

I am devastated to hear this.  While I don't know any details it was well known that Sade had health issues.  She had a liver transplant several years ago.  I doubt anyone is hiding anything. My condolences to her loved ones.

"I love you Nicky'. Huh? You love yourself?

And "It is what it is"? Yeah, a she--not an "it" or a "he." Get it right. Please pay respects. Don't say it doesn't matter, especially if you claim to be a fan.

What's with the 'he"? Sade was a she.

Oh, Sade's birth name was Nicky?

Well, she emerged as a woman.
