Tabloid Outing Bonanza For Two Huge Movie Stars

Categories: Celebs

The tabs have been on a rampage lately, uncovering all kinds of same-sex shenanigans reportedly engaged in by those married to the opposite sex.

The result is this Canadian newspaper article, which questions why we're so obsessed with outing, but manages -- in the process of its pained introspection -- to repeat all the outing details of the tabloids.

It's totally disingenuous!

The article describes:

*The masseuse who supposedly was the recipient of come-ons from John Travolta, who ended up dressing him down, as it were.

*And the supposed boyfriend of Will Smith, the star following that by showing up with Jada and the kids at a 76ers game and kissing Jada for the Jumbotron to capture.

So why are we so obsessed with "outing"?

I'll tell you (since they quoted me in the piece, using an old utterance of mine about the need for equalized reporting).

Because we read about all sorts of private lives of public figures. Why would we want to leave out the gay ones? Because we're stupid/squeamish/hypocritical?

Because some gays and bisexuals are so in the closet that we're dying to hear the truth for a change.

Because it seems only natural to us and we wonder why it can't be natural to them, too.

Anyway, the article makes some strange points, like how "Patrick Neal Harris" [sic] is just "a lowly TV star," forgetting that he's in a hugely successful family film franchise right now.

But it also says that it seems like Travolta wants to get caught, and asks if it would hurt the actor if he came out now.

"Deeply improbable," it replies.

The balls are in your court, JT.

if you measured all the ink spent on Kim Kardashian's wedding, and Angelina/Jen Fued, it wouldnt come close to all the ink spent on "outing". I find it so odd when gay people get mad at me for saying someone is gay. A few months ago i put together a list of all the closeted celebs i heard of and called it "The In 100" and send it out in my eblast as a fun, jokey thing to read. Then someone who works on "White Collar" wrote me to ask me to stop writing that Matt Bomer is gay. The guy who wrote me is gay btw. Then 3 months later- Bomer comes out. So basically this guy who said it would be "ethical" of me to stop writing about Bomer was basically asking me to lie. If someone is gay, and you say so, arent you in essence just reporting the truth? And since being gay isnt shameful (at least it shouldnt be)- why would anyone try to stop you from telling it?

I would like to see more political outings. That would make more sense. Esp. in the climate we are in.

JT come out as Vinnie Barbarino.  Mr. Kotter Mr. Kotter. What?

JT is an active member of the Church of Scientology, which has done great harm  to LGBTs and others. So he's hardly just minding his own business

The late great Eve Sedgwick wrote a brilliant series of books unmasking the "closet" a key to so much of what happens in our society. By understanding how it works you can develop an even more powerful sense of our literary history, our popular culture, what we call "knowledge" itself. The Epistemology of the Closet: Michael Musto, you have been doing your own version of this important work for decades too!

Oh, Michael, a "masseuse" is always, always, always a woman. Nothing gay about Travolta coming on to a woman, is there? You mean "masseur".

The only way Travolta could successfully come out at this point would be if he did it in a movie in which he plays himself as a tortured liar. He could control the story and get an Oscar. Who would play the young Travolta?

I think that gays like this stuf because it gives us hope as to what is possible and reminds us we're not alone. Just me i guess...

Ah, I remember the good ol' days when you outed that Cheery Bartender and her Hardy Boys husband.  That one even made the National Enq.!

Well, you shouldn't just out homophobes. Then saying someone's gay will only be used as a weapon. I think Musto's saying--and has always said--that there's nothoing wrong with being gay and with reporting that someone's gay. The celebrity can continue to be in the closet if they so choose, but the media doesn't have to stay silent about it.

Travolta has not been a movie STAR in YEAARS.The Pulp Fiction role was a gift from Tarantino and PF was also YEARRRRRS AGO.If Travolta is in fact, a closeted homosexual I do not think coming out would harm his "career".Outing oneself is a personal choice.I am not into public outing  unless the person is a raging homophobe but I do believe being open is the very best way to live. I hate the way people speak about homosexuality as if it is the biggest darkest secret one can have. It's not. We have moved on in society. It is true homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenered folk are not universally accepted in our society and have obstacles to overcome. But gayness is not the most terrible secret one can have, IMO.

He'll come out at 70 like so many actors and everyone will say, "Awww....Who?"

JT will NOT come out. It would be saying "My whole life has been a lie."

Isn't Miss Will Smith as well? I would love to top him or bottom for him. Either one, take your pick, Will!

I disagree with you. I think people should be allowed to come to turns with their sexuality on their own terms. If folks want to live in self confined space, that is their choice.I couldn't live that way but if that's what they want, that should be allowed to do so as long as they are not bad mouthing and discriminating against homosexuals. That said, people gossip.Everybody gossips and you can not control what other people say or think about you.Celebs, gay and straight should be used to people gossiping about every aspect about their lives.People talk because we care!

There is nothing wrong with being gay, bisexual, transgender, gender queer!

We are who we are and the problem isn't us, it's homophobia and heterosexism!

It even puts straight people in straightjackets! The homophobes love to rant about "freedom" but when it comes to be who one truly is, they hate it! Be free, be gay, be queer, BECOME AND BE!

yeah, like Richard Chamberlain when he turned 100 or so -- we all knew, who cares?

No it is not their choice to live in a self contained space. They are celebrities. They are written about. They know that. Everything about them gets written about, including their sexuality. Their choice is whether to ignore that, or go into the closet, or come out. That's their only choice.

Must concur. People lose their right to privacy when they choose to earn a living based on the image they sell to the public. And in a condition where a minority suffers unjustly, a celeb who sides with the majority is automatically committing an immoral act (prior LDM analogy: Jews supporting Hitler).

So if that celeb actually belongs with the minority while denying her affiliation, then she's at fault for sheer stupidity (another unforgivable condition when you're a public personality) and has set herself up for outing. And it's not like she doesn't have options: retreat further into the closet, come out, or give up the public career - can't take the heat, get outta the kitchen. Case in point: I recently had to get recloseted, because of the kind of job I got. Who'll care, I'm no image-peddler. And I'll re-out myself once I'm sure I can get away again with it.

Agreed. And since they're pushing their fake families on the public, obviously they're not living in a self contained space at all. They're manipulating the media and the media needs to even the score.
