There's a Glory Hole In A TCM Classic Movie!

This just came in from our own Southern Dave:

"Switching around from channel to channel, I came to TCM, where The Hanging Tree (1958), starring Gary Cooper, was showing.

"There's a storm, and the wind and rain cause a huge tree to topple over, displaying its roots and the big cavity below it.

"Maria Schell runs over and begins to find chunks of gold in the roots.

"Karl Malden follows her and starts yelling, 'Glory hole! Glory hole!'

"I nearly fell out of my Lazy-Boy.

"There's a dissolve and all sorts of miners show up yelling 'Glory hole!'

"Turns out it's a mining term! Who knew?

"This has confirmed the axiom that everything you need to know you can find in the movies.

"Back in the '70s, when pornos had actual stories and depicted (however briefly) activities other than sex, I learned the best method of scrambling eggs from a 'skin flick.' (God, what a quaint term!)

"Education is a wonderful thing."

Amazing!

I wish Malden had started yelling "Glory hole!" in Gypsy

Circumstances forced me to cook -- after a fashion -- at a very early age.

But I always did it my way.

For scrambled eggs, I broke eggs in a pan with some butter, added a splash of milk, maybe a sprinkling of cheese and scrambled same with a fork. The eggs always came out scorched, but edible.

In this porn film (the title of which I have long forgotten), the guy broke his eggs into a bowl, added milk, whipped it up so you got lots of air in the eggs and poured it into a hot greased pan and then nudged it around with a spatula, the way you would for an omelette. Eggs came out nice and fluffy.

Mundane, huh? But I was 17 and this was a revelation!

No secret, high-protein ingredient involved.

Speaking of education, what's the porn flick with the egg scrambling method and what is the method?

It's also a glass blowing term. The hole through which one inserts the stick (yes I know) with a glob of unformed glass on the end to melt it so that it is gooey (yes, yes, I know) is called a glory hole.

I bet Gary Cooper enjoyed one now and then.

You're one of my favorite posters.
