Well, with the exception of Jo, the common traits of these ladies (i.e.aging, plain-looking gals with a spunky personality) unfortunately lump them into the 'she's MUST be gay since no straight man would want to fuck her' cliche. Sad but consistent stereotype attached to single (white) women.

Politically correct?! Whatever. You like their dowdy look, go for it. But for others who may not have been attracted to the likes of Miss Jane Hathaway, not many representations of strong, aging, single women existed beyond her. To clarify, I didn't imply that the stereotype was sad. I meant that Jane Hathaway (Josephine, Hazel, etc) could not have been perceived by the viewers as anything but lesbian because of certain traits, which is one-dimensional and the "sad" part.
