Jonathan Frid, RIP: Gay?

Jonathan Frid, who so memorably played vampire Barnabas Collins in the daytime soap Dark Shadows, has passed, leaving behind a personal life as cloaked as Barnabas himself.

After all, as it says on imdb.com, Frid was "never married, believing the life of an actor was fraught with insecurities."

And as my friend William Love--a true-blue Dark Shadows aficionado--remembers, Frid withdrew whenever personal questions were asked.

Frid's familiar line about his character was: "I don't play a vampire. I play a man with a secret."

That seemed to apply in real life, too.

Frid always came off like a fey cross between Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe, but his culty female fans through the years always argued "He loves women!" or "He's asexual. He doesn't believe in having sex!"

And there was the hot guy William knows who once approached Frid as a fan, only to have the actor coo, "Let's talk about you."

(Another male I know claims Frid once chased him for sex, but the guy tends to have a vivid imagination, so take it with a grain of vampire dust.)

Anyway, did Frid leave the earth out of sheer excitement over the upcoming Dark Shadows movie he appears in--which looks like it's been turned into a pumped-up fish-out-of-water comedy--or was he dodging a bullet?

We'll never know.

We'll never know a lot of things.

Update: But from the info above, combined with the insider comments gleaned as a result of this blog, we do know: Yep, he was gay!

PS: Thanks to Glenn Queen for finding this amazing shot.

I do know by the words of Jonathan Frid, he practice celibacy which no sex with a man or woman...he stated so up front on Merv Griffin Show in 1968 did not hurt Dark Shadows , House of Dark Shadows either......

If you find the lover of Jonathan Frid please show it in his handwriting. This photo of Louis Edmond and Jonathan Frid was posted in a Teen magazine in 1968 and it did not hurt the show one bit..Jonathan Frid's Barnabas was still heterosexual.

I was recently told there this stupid discussion going on here and somehow my name got dragged into it.  First, Carol, I did not and would not have had any "romance" with Jonathan Frid.  How absurd.  I did not handle his personal affairs, his manager did and later he paid someone else to do that for him.  I was a collaborator of his on his one man shows and his personal assistant.  That turned into a friendship and, believe or not, many men and women have platonic relationships and enjoy close friendships.  I have been lucky to have enjoyed quite a few in this manner with men younger and older than myself.

And to you RM McFly a/k/a Mary Easley, I do not know what your beef with me is as I have never done a thing to you but I do wish you would grow up and out of the petty high school nonsense.  As usual, you don't know what you are talking about regarding me.  And why when you talk so tough are you afraid to use your real name rather than some fictional character?  Why is that?

@nckersey Of course you and Frid were never in a romantic relationship, he was gay, lol.

Caprice u r in DENIAL! JF was gay! I was personal friends with Louie Edmonds and that pic was NOT a DS cast party!! Geez! Where DO u get ur intel, the same place as where George W did about the non-existant WMD's in Iraq?! That was one of Louie's pix of them on Fire Island. He told me many stories about he and Jon going to gay bars back in the day! And my late friend Craig Hamrick, who wrote Louie's biography and was gay himself used to c JF in gay bars in Manhattan ALL THE TIME in the late 90's before he moved back to Canada. It's sad that Jon had to be in the closet, it's even sadder that ppl like u r the reason!

Jonathan was gay, but like many in his generation, he kept it private. That was his choice and his right. Its better for gay men and women today but unfortunately there is still much ignorance and prejudice around -too bad.  I remember him saying once when asked to comment on some of the more outrageous artists and musicians, "they dare to be different". He, like most gay men and women was able to be accepting and open-minded with others because he knew what it was like to be different. I loved his talent and even more his kindness and grace when I had the pleasure of meeting him. He created an iconic character and thrilled millions with his portrayal of Barnabas Collins. He loved acting and was always grateful for and  to his fans.  He lived a long and productive life and I will always admire him. Godspeed Jonathan-you were the best !

No, Jonathan Frid is not gay. He practiced celibacy. He has not the desire for physical relationship with a man or a woman, although he has many friends of both sex.He had lived this way for a long time. Jonathan Frid did have a friend that was very close to him, took care of all business affairs, her name was Nancy. Rumors by some fans, they were more than just friends.. She worked for him for more than thirty years.

NO. Jonathan Frid is not a homosexual. He lives a celibate life. He is 87. Before becoming an actor, he wanted to be Presbyterian Minister. Although he never had become a minister, he is heavy involved in charity works for Presbyterian church in Canada. He is noted for the role of Barnabas Collins of the ABC series Dark Shadows 1966-1971. He has dated many women but he has never fallen in love. He rather be bachelor then to marry the wrong woman who is love with his character Barnabas Collins. He has many friends of both sexes. Jonathan Frid died April 14 2012. He loved serving the Lord Jesus and his family church the Presbyterian faith. He loved his cat, his quiet life in his hometown in Canada. He sometimes had a part in a play or two. He enjoyed acting, but not the huge fan fare. He enjoyed all of the Dark Shadows reunion. He was amazed in how the fans kept getting younger as the years go by. He laughed at his own part in the New Movie Johnny Depp's Dark Shadows. During the early sixties, Mr. Frid was a member of New York's Hugh Hefner's Playboy Club. He was a regular visitor. http://lorrainestheplaza.0catch.com/fridboy.jpg Jonathan Frid going to the Playboy Club. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25692985@N07/4341505217/ 1969 Barnabas Collins Jonathan Frid compiled by Jonathan Frid shares 100 photographs and his membership with the Playboy Club. Mr. Frid had his first acting role: as part of a choochoo train in a Sunday school play. "Probably a middle car. I wasn't even an engineer or the caboose." Despite the minor role, Sunday school nurtured Frid's dormant acting bug in other ways. "As a young boy I used to think I wanted to be a minister, because my grandmother thought I wanted to be a minister. I used to dress up and put gowns on and make like I was a priest. I used to hold forth on the stairwell and pretend it was a chancel. So I guess I got my gothic roots pretending that the stairs was a gothic church." "Never married, believing the life of an actor was fraught with insecurities." Mr. Frid stated often interviews during his Dark Shadows run.  Mr. Frid continues to perform his one-man shows, now under the banner of "Charity Associates", to raise money for a variety of charities. In the early 1990s, he moved to the town of Ancaster, Ontario, Canada not far from his birthplace of Hamilton.

Frid realized he lacked the calling to be a priest.

In prep school, Frid discovered the joy of acting. “I was about twelve or thirteen or fourteen, and I was in a class play and I just loved it.

Well, gay, str8, bi.. whatever, don't matter. When I was younger I use to laugh at all this cack, gossip and such.. not so much anymore. It's disgusting how well known people (or not so well know, people dog their friends and loved ones these days just as bad) get picked over after death, people talking about sex lives, money, crimes, etc. Blah... Anyways, I can ID with Johnathan, sex is not often worth the effort, and relationship are a bother. I am happy with just friends. Sadly, most of my friends are obsessed with getting laid & getting into a relationship (relationships are just a polite persons excuse for booty..lol.). Even when the people I know get in relationships they still got a peeper creeping for the next piece of ass! No class. Perhaps I'm just getting old. :-P

Who’s to say Jonathan Frid wasn’t bisexual?  Going to a gay bar or chatting up men doesn’t rule out doing that with women, both genders claim encounters with him.  His favorite author was 3/4 gay 1/4 straight.  It makes no difference to me, I just wanted to say that no matter what, Jonathan was handsome, intelligent and sensitive, the sexiest man that ever lived.  Love you forever Jonathan.  Hope you’re reunited with the love of your life.

You couldn't be more wrong.  And how can you even say this about a man you do not know and who has passed and can't defend himself?  And as far as the pictures go....uh, gee, doesn't everyone usually wear a bathing suit at the beach?  You disgust me.

Jonathan Frid was not gay! Anyone that says that is just plain homophobic! He explained why he never married in an interview that he did in 2007. He did not marry because he felt that his profession was too uncertain to provide a steady income for a family, so he would not marry, but stay faithful to the profession of acting. He also referred to his lady friend in an interview he did at a Dark Shadows Festival in 2009. He was definitely not gay. Why is it that society feels that everyone must be married by a certain age,and if they are not, then they must be gay. I am 62 years old and never married because I chose not to marry. Marriage is not necessary to define who I am, or give a purpose to my life. I am single and damned proud of it. No one is going to EVER tie me down. I am not gay, if anything I am asexual as I do not have any use or need for sex. Boring, messy waste of valuable time. It's the single life for me, as it was for Jonathan Frid. If you homophobic people cannot deal with that it is your problem. Do not presume to sully the image and memory of a fine actor with your hangups and proclamations. When you do that, your ignorance shows.

I was in my 20s back when Dark Shadows was all the rage trying to make it on the stage, never did, but I had 2 roommates, one straight, one gay and we often ran into a few of the DS crew, including Jon and Lou. My gay roomie, who was quite attractive, had a thing for Jon and believe me he put it out there, but never got anywhere. In the dozens of times my roomies and I saw Jon, even partied with him a few times, we never figured out if he was or wasn't. One Sunday morning, we saw Jon coming out of a church on 5th Ave. and getting into a taxi. It was a protestant church, but I don't remember the denomination. Later, I heard that he was a regular church goer. I'm not saying this had a bearing on his sexual orientation, just thought it was interesting.

Not getting married and not having sex doesn't make anyone gay, for heaven's sake. The world we live in is sick. Just have a Christian man  who is refraining from sex or anyone for that matter and automatically they are labelled guy. Peopel are obsessed with sex.

Like SO many other DS fans, I would run from the school bus to get home to watch it in time. I don't care about his sexual orientation - it had nothing to do with his character, on screen or off. I was a big fan, and sad to hear of his passing. I hope he had a full and happy life, and my condolences to his surviving loved ones. By the way, the movie was GREAT. It brought a unique and humorous dimension to Barnabas. It was refreshing to see a different kind of vampire movie for a change.RIP Mr Frid

I just saw this article last night, and to be truthful it didn't impress me. Since when is marriage the litmus test of sexual orientation? I have known several gay men who married (sometimes more than once) and had families. Just because Mr. Frid withdrew when asked personal questions didn't make him gay either. Maybe he wanted to keep his personal life personal. That he managed to keep his life to himself is admirable unlike the celebs of today. I am always amazed on how people are perceived in public opinion. If a man like Mr Frid is well mannered and styalish, gay men want to claim him for their own, straight men are threatened by his maleness and call them gay, straight women call him gay if he doesn't pay her any attention. That he was fabulous there is no question. Still that doesn't make him gay. I was one of those kids running home from school to watch DS. He kissed his leading ladies like any woman would like to be kissed! Myselft included. Let's just sit back and admire his body of work, not just his body.

As a devoted Dark Shadows fan who met Mr. Frid on more than a few occasions, I need to vehemently state that to print something like this after his death is nothing short of cowardly. Jonathan saw fit to keep his private life private. It had nothing to do with, as some are saying, a "dirty little secret." Remember, the man came from a different generation. To disrespect him by discussing his sexuality now is the same as spitting on his corpse. It's apparent to me that Michael Musto is nothing but a vicious queen with a very smarmy, self-satisfied attitude. Perhaps he got his jollies by writing this, but I can say with certainty that legions of Dark Shadows fans are NOT amused. That's OK, though. Karma will take care of all of this, as Mr. Musto will find out someday.

Personally I feel that it is quite disrespectful to open up Mr. Frid's personal life for discussion - not only at this time of our sincere mourning but at any time now or in the future. It is not only disrespectful to this extraordinary actor-but to the Dark Shadows Cast (who is truly family) and all of us who loved him.  Mr. Frid was a well-respected and deeply-loved actor to whom we Dark Shadows fans hold the greatest love, respect, and affection. Mr. Frid and his fellow Dark Shadows family - have made a sincere difference to so many of our lives by their ongoing kindness and availability to fans over the many years - even to this day. Please allow Mr. Frid the same kindness that we all deserve - to keep our private lives private and to rest in peace surrounded by the warmth of only love of the good life we lived on behalf our families and others. Out of respect for Mr. Frid,  his family,  his beloved fellow Dark Shadows cast family, and committed Dark Shadows fans all over the world, I (and so many that I know) will be disheartened if the discussion of personal matters is allowed to continue in this or any other forum. With heartfelt appreciation from a devoted fan, Valerie from Boston

I could care if he was gay or not.  But the fact of the matter is sir, the man himself was very very private.  He moved back to Canada to get away from the spotlight that Dark Shadows brought to him and would only embrace that part of his life years later.  I doubt he'd appreciate you saying anything about his private life, even after he was dead.  Don't use a man's death as a chance to champion a cause like this in such a way.  It's in poor taste, especially when it flies in the face of how the man lived his life.

yes the photo on the beach is of Mr. Frid with his TV co actor whom was only a good friend.  It's too bad that the photo doesnt show the other two people that were also with them on that day being two actresses from the show as well.  As for some of the bars, about five of the DS actors always, always went to two of those bars being the closest to them between their studio and their apartments or the subway.  The five of them would drink to relieve the stress of doing the high pressured Live tappings and trying to please the brass.           Mr. Frid was a very very fussy and particular person whom mentioned that he'd prefer his privacy rather than to share an apt with someone or too be bothered with a relationship.  He spent his later years most happy doing his One Man Shows/readings and enjoying his backyard and garden at his home in Canada, out of the spotlight.

Gay, straight, blue, or purple.  Mr. Frid was a fine actor and I thank him for scaring the shit out of me when I was little while watching DS after kindergarten.

If he was gay, fine; what I resent is the innuendo re his sex life.  I don't need to know what bars he went to or what he did or said on Fire Island. That's what Musto and others refuse to acknowledge.  It is not gay self-loathing.  It is called CLASS.

I’m the poster who said he thought one of the photos below was fake. Thanks Bob’s for correcting me. Now I get one of the reasons I was so drawn to Jonathan Frid as a teen back in the 60s still trying figure out my sexuality. I was connecting with him in a way I didn't understand at the time. Not only a vampire (with all its inherent sexuality) but a gay vampire with a secret.  And even before Jonathan Frid came to Dark Shadows, it was Louis Edmond's various characters and Joel Crothers’ various characters I was drawn to.  Didn’t “know” they were gay back then but I guess I “knew” anyway. Clearly these actors shouldn’t be second-guessed about how they handled their sexuality and their public lives and this shouldn’t be the focus at the time of their passing.  But as I guy who was kid back in the 60s, knowing now does matter to me because it helps me see that who I am was there 50 years ago even before I was self-aware enough to identify the right questions.

Frid came from a very, very different era where actors kept their private lives private. Straights did it as well. Wasn't it Davy Jones who kept his marital status private to avoid alienating his fans? Unless someone had a very public meltdown, like Patty Duke, mental health issues were hushed up.

It's one thing to have issues with closeted celebrities in 2012. I doubt this would have been possible in 1967. Most long term fans had figured it out anyway. He could have come out in his later years; it wouldn't have made too big a splash. But, for whatever reason, he chose not too. But it was still his choice to make.

I tell you, I thought he was gay but I couldn't help wishing that I met a man exactly like him for myself!  He will be missed by many, many people.
