Madonna Album Is #1--But Here's Why

This just came in from a music-industry source:

"Madonna sold 359,000 copies of her MDNA album to debut at #1, a higher sales total than any of her albums since Music in 2000.

"But the catch is that if you bought a ticket to one of her concerts this year and 'opted in' to buy the album as part of the ticket price, you got the album at no extra cost.

"And those sales counted for the album chart, along with regular album-only sales in stores and online.

"So who knows what it would have sold as a stand-alone album?"

Interesting -- but wait a minute! She's stealing from Lady Gaga again!

Remember when Gaga's album went to number one, partly because of all the 99-cent copies sold?

Madonna topped her by charging nothing!

I don't get this talk of a Gaga vs. Madge feud, because it's starting to sound like a pr created publicity stunt (remember that SNL skit they did two years ago?)

PLEASE my nosebleed seats at yankee stadium cost me $200 each... the LEAST she could do would be to throw in the album. it wasn't free, it was a bundle

I love all the bitch-whining that Musto started with his little trashtalking.  I wonder how many folks are aware that Britney Spears was denied a #1 debut with "Blackout" back in 2007 because Billboard CHANGED its long-standing policy for the Top 200 chart eligibility?  (The Top 200 is the "album" chart.)  Before Nov 2007, the policy was that NO album that was available from only one retail outlet was eligible to chart.  However, the Eagles had recently signed an exclusive deal with Wal-Mart and that their new album "Long Road Out of Eden" would be available ONLY through Wal-Mart (both the brick-and-mortar stores and the website).  So, wonder of wonders, both albums were planned for release the same day and Billboard just happened to choose THAT week to change the policy to allow single-retailer exclusives to count (a rather lame excuse was offered about not knowing the Eagles' album would debut at #1 or sell 750K copies, blah, blah, blah).  So, Britney lost out because of a chart policy change basically done to accomodate the Eagles and Wal-Mart.

Some apologists at Billboard had said the chart should reflect the sales of ALL albums--whether they were mass-released or single-retail exclusive--as a reason to bring the new Eagles album onto the chart.  Of course, this was a time when "catalog" albums were given their own chart to keep the Top 200 "fresh" and weed out "older albums" from the chart.  That policy was finally changed after Michael Jackson's death and THREE of his catalog albums sold better than the so-called #1 album--for a month.  About 3 months later, the chart restored the catalog albums to the main chart, although a catalog chart was kept, so that after Whitney's recent death, several of her old albums returned to the Top 200 (with a couple making the Top 20--including "The Bodyguard" soundtrack which made the Top 10).

And, as a previous commenter noted, this wasn't a new thing.  Prince had included a copy of "Musicology" with a concert ticket (Billboard said the album had been bundled into the ticket price--although I don't remember reading anything about the prospect of getting the album; I was very surprised when I entered the auditorium and the person scanning the ticket handed me a copy of the CD).  And, at present, any internet pre-orders are also built into an album's first week sales (I'm not sure if the internet music stores send the total pre-order numbers on the "release date" or if they only send the figures as downloaded).

(For the record, how does anyone suppose that Gibson's little Bible snuff film made $400 million in its opening weekend?  ALL the tickets that had been purchased weeks--or even months--before the film's release were counted along with however many had been sold on the day of release.  Even if the ticket buyer didn't go see it until the following Monday or Tuesday, that ticket counted for the weekend opening.)

it seems like everyone who has a number one album these days resorts to some kind of gimmick to get it.

but in madonna's defense, wouldn't people buying tickets to her tour supporting MDNA have bought MDNA that first week anyway?so in actuality, her plan probably didnt add more sales, did it?

359,000 is not alot of sales compared to when people (king of pop) would sell a cool million in their first week of release. actually, 359, 000 is quite low. she didn t sell 500,000. which means she didn t even certify gold (yet).

She actually bit that album with ticket price trick from Prince. He was the first to do it five years ago.

NOT true.  Those who bought concert tickets had the OPTION of paying additional for the cd, so anyone who bought tickets and received a cd, too, that's because they PAID for the cd.  No smoke and mirrors involved.

darolo

Incorrect. They did have to pay for it. It was about $5 cheaper than the release day price but as it was added in to the ticket price it appeared to be free! Let's not forget this is Interscope running the show here, not Madonna nor Lady Gaga ( who's album was priced at 99c on Amazon for 1 day!! ). Let's also not forget that the people who purchased Madonna tour tickets are going to be Madonna fans - aren't they? - and so would buy the album anyway!!!! So frankly MDNA would be #1 regardless!

What she actually did is managed to get more product into the hands of her fans than anyone else did that week, so she earned the number one.

MADONNA IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FEMALE SOLO ARTIST OF ALL TIME AND I DO NOT KNOW ONE PERSON WHO WOULD HAVE BOUGHT MADONNA TICKETS AND NO ALBUM>>>>>>SO IN OTHER WORDS WHO CARES ABOUT ANY OF THIS>>>MADONNA IS GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER HIT ALBUM AND TOUR REGARDLESS OF IF YOU WANT HER TO OR NOT

Madonna (who I was not a huge fan of) cannot copy Gaga since she was here first. In reality she can but still. The words just don't make sense.

Why am I not surprised to see this coming from Michael Musto. Yes, you two were friends a long, long time ago for two minutes and then she moved on. Get over it.

As Billboard wrote yesterday, people who bought the concert tickets are Madonna fans. Most people I know shriek at the idea of paying the price that Madonna charges for her shows. These are real, hardcore Madonna fans who would have bought the album had it not been included. Also, none of the digital downloads were included. Billboard only added in physical copies shipped. Had the downloads been counted, her numbers would have been much, much higher -- it is a largely sold out tour after all.

Princes's Musicology went to #3, but back then, every single Prince concertgoer automatically got his CD, so that really upped his chart position. After that, Billboard changed the rule so that the concert ticket buyer had to be given an OPTION to also get the CD. That's what the Madonna audience was faced with. Though I can't imagine why you wouldn't take the option.

Musto

Prince did the same thing with Musicology but it didn't go to number one.

Because you could pay the same price for the concert ticket and not get the CD if you don't opt for it. If you do opt for it, you get it at no extra cost.

How is a CD "free" when you buy a very expensive concert ticket?

NpL

Sure if you are paying $300 ++ why not? And also it's not the full album anyway, it's the 'clean version'. There's no Gang Bang.

I didn't know you could get a free album if you bought a ticket to her concert!! Damn.

She will always outsmart Lady Gaga.

I thought the same thing, Michael you were friends with Madonna years ago why are you always trash talking her? There can't be something positive for her like there are for other celebs on here.

Who cares if some are from concert tickets? I got tickets to her show and I didn't get the CD because I already pre ordered it on Itunes, and so did my friends that got tickets.

Please stop always being negative when it comes to Madonna.

Ichabod

If they would have bought it anyway, why not charge them separately for it?

Oh right, because it was a gift to her fans blah blah blah.

Kevin

I'm assuming this was in response to me. You're missing my point. When you buy a very expensive concert ticket, receiving a CD in that price is hardly "free"

are you kidding me? gaga does not put a better show than Madonna unlike gaga Madonna dances and really good, gaga just jumps around and she cant mange to do that good cause she ends up falling in most of her concerts. Madonna does a better job and is still a queen gaga doesn't even use her real name shes a jester

Debbie Harry without all the stage theatrics gave Madonna a run for her money. Back in the 80's. Pure singing performance and live act.

Have you seen GAGA and Madonna in concert? Or just Madonna? Because Madonna does not hold a candle to GAGA....GAGA blows her off the stage with her stage production, choreography and vocals. I used to love Madonna, but clearly there is a new queen in town. Madonna cannot outsmart GAGA in any realm....I am thankful they are both in this world, however GAGA has raised the bar in terms of talent and production value...Also, Madonna's latest album is horrible...Her vocals are atrocious. GAGA has done more in her 25 years than Madonna has in her entire life....Outsmarting? I do not think so.

Blake, if he were friends with Madonna before, now we know why they're not anymore. I guess Michael now works for Lady Gaga's camp? FYI, fans who paid VIP tickets worth $250 and above for the concert did automatically get the CD's as part of the bundle. Hence, we paid for it and it counts for the first week sales according to Nielsen.

Oh well, as they say, those who speaks negative of other people thinks negatively of themselves. And besides, M herself will not pay attention to this pathetic article.

Madonnaholics, UNITE!

Lisba

LOL. I love how he can get inside people's minds and know that they all would have bought it anyway.

And as for the digital downloads, Madonna's not the only artist who's had that, so she can't cry victim over that.

And I love how he says "You were friends, then she moved on." The guy knows nothing. She was a horror from day one, right?

Talus

Oh please. Madonna paved the way for GAGA and SO many others. Without THE QUEEN there would be no Princesses. Let's talk again in 30 years (if we haven't croaked) to see if GAGA is still around.

gaga is an amateur.. her shows look like high school musicals, her makeup is applied with a shovel and her wigs are old mops.

bet you didnt know that.

I walked out after 40 mins at the only Gaga show I ever attended! Seriously it was at the O2 in London. I was sooo bored! The production was amateurish compared with Madonna. There were several minutes of actual silence with nothing happening between songs! Just lights down & frantic activity off stage. The 'choreography' as you call it was tedious, boring and little more than stomping for the most part. I am used to high quality professionalism, theatre and variation. Give me Madonna any day of the week! Madonna's costumes are relevant to the theme not just dressing for shock value! Gaga is, and always will be, I'm afraid, a second-rate imitation.
