Madonna's Album Took a Record Nosedive, Say Insiders

I'm happy for Madonna's longevity.

I don't agree with all the ageist complaints about her.

I realize the decks are stacked harder against the woman because of these prejudices.

And I applaud her for using a crafty array of marketing devices to try staying on top, as she's always done.

The other day, I wrote about how her MDNA album went to number one, partly because those who paid for concert tickets got the option of a free CD, and those "comps" were included in the chart statistics as if paid for.

Well, it's not number one anymore.

According to early figures from sources, Madonna seems to have dropped from 359,000 sales in her inflated first week to just 46,000 in her second week.

Adds a source of my own:

"If true, that drop of 88 percent is the biggest drop in SoundScan history (since 1991) from a debut week to a second week.

"Not surprisingly, the record was previously held by Lady Gaga's album last year, which dropped 84 percent from its inflated first-week numbers of 1 million (with 600,000 of those sold at 99 cents)."

Really? That's actually terrific for Madonna.

At least she can say, "I broke Gaga's record!"

Anyway, I will update this blog's comments as more solid data comes in.

If the competition is Lionel Richie, I actually hope Madge stayed at number one.

It's official.  According to the Billboard site, it was the biggest-ever drop (since 1991) for a #1 debut in its second week, down 86.7% from 359,000 to 46,000, dropping from #1 to #8.  Lady Gaga dropped 84.3%, from 1.11 million to 174,000.

And she's even hawking her new perfume at Macy's!  Supposedly a personal appearance included to a few lucky stars.  No autographs, please.

She should've done a different sound, so sick of the gay overproduced dance shit.  The songs aren't don't even sound like finished song ideas, just a bunch of production and not even good hooks.

She fell far because she sold well the first week, as with Gaga. She's moved 400K in 2 weeks, nothing to sneeze at considering her age and lack of a current hit single and freeze on promotions. The tour bundling thing was a success, but it created bad optics and guaranteed a second-week drop. It ain't over. (PS She now holds the record among non-seasonal CDs, not all CDs. And only 3% worse than Gaga, whose own sales were nothing to sneeze at either.)

The decks are only stacked harder against her because she's trying to do the same thing she did at 24. Evolve!!!

It couldn't happen to a more horrible person.

well! i wish she would just do that: RETIRE. with her bajillions.what that queen of pop needs to start building is that school in africa she promised she would do in exchange for those kids she bought on the black/white market.what those poor kids must think of their new mother?

As the linked article explains, the great majority of the sales counted in the first week were the "free" ones given to concert ticket buyers. You can say "it sold well the first week" but that's stretching it.

And "lack of a hit single." Yeah, because it sucks. Now you're turning that around and using it to defend Madonna? "Give her a break. She doesn't have a hit single." The first single didn't do that well either, not hitting the top echelons and plummeting rather quickly.
