Video of My Susan Lucci Speech!

Categories: Musto on Musto

I was so full of gratitude at the "You Like Me!" show consisting of performers re-creating famously effusive awards acceptance speeches over at Ars Nova.

I was mainly grateful that in doing the 1999 speech Susan Lucci gave after copping the Emmy on her 19th try, I remembered every single word without having to resort to cheat sheets or embarrassing shrieks of "Line!"

And why not? Lord knows I'd rehearsed this thing almost as much as Lucci herself did.

And so, I managed to tearfully get through all the thanking of the audience, the parents, the kids, the husband, the teachers, the head writer, the cast mates, and the fans!

And in order!

Anyway, above is the video.

Oh yeah, I'm grateful for the video, too!

And to Michael Schulman and Rachel Shukert for creating the show and Peter James Cook for directing it.

Oh, by the way, here's Lucci's actual speech so you can compare and contrast. If I added a word or whimper here and there, sue me!

Thank you, thank you. I hope I can get an award for Best Interpretation of an Awards Acceptance Speech. That would go nicely with my new knighthood.

The performers were all brilliant:

Ryan Raftery as host BillyCrystal (“Those eyes, those thighs, surprise, it’s The Crying Game!”)

Cocreator Michael Schulmanas a delightfully self mocking Meryl Streep

Cocreator Rachel Shukertas the aggressively cheery Roberto Benigni

Molly Pope doing ahilariously droll medley of Oscar songs (helped on "Colors of TheWind" by Julie Lake as Sacheen Littlefeather)

Emily McNamara a riot asAngelina Jolie, and also as a drunken Mariah Carey, with Kenny Melman as LeeDaniels.

Julie Klausner as ShirleyMacLaine, thanking the “turbulent brilliance of Debra Winger” and decidingabout the award, “I deserve this!”

Roslyn Hart as Jane Fonda, signing her speech as she talks it, for those who weren’t lucky enough to see(or hear) “Coming Home”

Bradford Louryk as MelissaLeo, who’s jittery and full of names to thank and F bombs to drop

Michael Cyril Creighton asOprah Winfrey, so grand as she announces that she once told God to “Use me!”

And Dan Fishback as FionaApple, mocking the whole process by saying she didn’t come up with aspeech—then serving a carefully rehearsed bit about how the kids out thereshould just be themselves, blah blah.

All genius!
