Which Celebs Are Vegetarians/Vegans And Why?
A PETA brochure I picked out of a box like Alicia Silverstone's baby picks food out of her mouth told me the answer.
It's everyone from Alicia to Pamela Anderson to the Dalai Lama, with stops along the way for black swan Natalie Portman ("I really, really love animals") and ex-Spider-Man Tobey Maguire ("I just never really liked meat").
Here are some of the most persuasive quotes from world-class veggie eaters:
Sir Paul McCartney:
"Even little chickens suffer pain and fear, experience a range of feelings and emotions, and are as intelligent as mammals, including dogs, cats, and even some primates."
Alicia Silverstone: "Since I've gone vegetarian, my body has never felt better and my taste buds have been opened up to a whole new world. I invite you to join me in living a healthy, cruelty-free lifestyle."
Pamela Anderson: "Chickens, pigs, and other animals? They are interesting individuals with personalities and intelligence!"
Alec Baldwin: "Every time we sit down to eat, we make a choice. Please choose vegetarianism. Do it for animals. Do it for the environment, and do it for your health."
Russell Simmons: "Chickens raised for food today are covered in excrement, they're diseased, and they're drugged up with all sorts of toxins that you are ingesting if you eat chickens. I have been a vegan for many years."
James Cromwell: "So-called farms today treat animals like so many boxes in a warehouse, chopping off portions of beaks and tails and genitals with no painkillers at all, inflicting third-degree burns repeatedly by branding cows, ripping out the teeth of pigs, and just a horrible catalog of abuses that, if done to dogs or cats, would be illegal on grounds of animal cruelty." And he was in Babe!
And finally, his Holiness, the Dalai Lama: "It was the death of a chicken that finally strengthened my resolve to become vegetarian. ... I find it unacceptable that violence is the basis of some of our food habits."
