"Christopher Street Should Have a Walk of Fame!"

That's what one of the big winners at the Get Out magazine awards at Splash told me the other night.

The Christopher Street bar Boots & Saddle won awards for its staff, its karaoke night (with lovely Victoria Chase), and other aspects as well.

But owner Robert Ziegler deserves a special honor for crusading against the continuing crime wave that has hit that area in the past few years.

As he told me:

"Christopher Street needs to be landmarked, to reduce crime, and for the sake of future generations.

"There should be rainbow flags up and down it!

"There should also be a walk of fame, with stars of people who were instrumental in the early gay movement."

Great idea!

I'll start with some names of legends who absolutely need to have stars there:

Sylvia Rivera

Marsha P. Johnson

Harry Hay

Rudi Gernreich

Larry Kramer

You can finish the list.

And don't say Rin Tin Tin!

What a ridiculous idea!!! It's because of trashy bars like Boots & Saddle that make our neighborhood unsafe. They draw in the lowest of the low and I, personally, would like them gone. I'm a gay man, but I would never step into that hell hole of a bar. It's not at all what it once was. I'm surprised Robert Ziegler was able to a whole sentence together. He's such an idiot.

Thanks much for using pic of me in front of the legendary Stonewall. An honor, indeed, to be showcased in your pages in front of the Stonewall.

You are so right regarding the Walk of Fame. An idea long past due.

Well, Everybody should come on out to Brooklyn, as Brooklyn Pride, Inc. is celebrating a true Stonewall Veteran, Storme DeLarverie on June 7, 2012.  It's going to be a lovely affair.  Check it out, share and RSVP:  https://www.facebook.com/event...

I have to nominate Barbra, Bette, Celine and Cher. Judy and Liza too, of course! Also Y-O-U, Musto! And one last one, Jonathan Larson. I think that would be nice.

there's a Gay Walk of Fame in WeHo (near The Abbey), but I think plans for it have stalled. Liz Taylor and Christina Aguilera are the only ones on it so far...

Feel free to create your star walk but please note that it cannot look like the Hollywood Walk of Fame as it is trademarked. Perhaps a rainbow design? Good luck.

Bob Koehler, a great gay and AIDS activist who died several years ago, also ran the trend-setting Loft clothing store on Christopher Street and we spread some of his ashes in front of where it was. He'll be there forever whether or not he gets a star in the sidewalk.

Already you're turning it into a contest between blacks and Latinas (Sylvia Rivera)? It doesn't look like the list he gave is in order of prominence, it was just names.

Liza, Babs, the Divine Miss M, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Merman...

it´s not a contest. truth is: a black drag queen started the riot! just like rock and roll. (her name should be at the top of the list)! A1 star. number 1 position.

I know. And aren't people of color one group?

look! stonehole...YOU got issues! MARSHA wasn`t a female.he was a black man! get it right!

the only reason the 2 people of COLOR (hate that expression) are even on this list (no denying) IS because they are the crucial factor in history or else--no list.

they should build a momument for MARSHA...right there in the middle of sheridan square. actually, our first gay holiday. marsha p. johnson day. in honour of her/him.stop the hate stonehole!black is where it's at!get over it america!

Two female people of color out of his five and you're bitching?? You need to read. Or are you going to into your usual "real women" routine?

yes! it is sickening but it must be. we all know who most of the stars will be handed out to: white, gay, and/or male. (and probably, of no or little significance.)so what is the point of the walk of fame? like history class in grammar school?!

columbus did not discover america! so, why do they keep teaching that?

Steinhope

Bravo! Besides, you said "Here are some names..." You never said it was in any particular order. It's sickening to think that now people are going to campaign that some stars are better than others. It defeats the whole point.

My list was in no order. It's impossible to quantify which person did more. They are all equal on the Hall of Fame. Harry Hay did tremendous things. And when I recently wrote about Marsha, someone said Storme DeLarverie started the uprising. Other names have come up too. (Storme should be on my list.) Anyway, you typically turn something about celebration and make it competitive and ugly.
