I Sang "Happy Birthday" To Holly Woodlawn

Categories: Nightlife

Way back in the 1980s, I was thin, I had a tuxedo that fit, and my voice was like butter, so I was the perfect choice (along with the backups from my Motown group the Must) to wish Warhol star Holly Woodlawn a Happy Birthday at this delicious club debauch.

To be extra kind, I chose the song "Sixteen Candles" (which would make Holly 15 at the time--there's always one extra candle for good luck)

It all seemed so innocent then (though it wasn't).

Thankfully, Nelson Sullivan caught the moment with his camera.

Enjoy, then blow out the candles.

And here's a bonus shot of me looking terribly chic in the '90s.

Holy shit!  That was live?  Love the look, the voice, the ease with which you handle an audience, and your confidence behind a mike.  Bravo!

Now we know where Michael Feinstein got his look from...he stole it from you!

Holly Woodlawn's an ageless goddess. And you, Mikey! No wonder you can do those literally breathless deliveries in your Keith Olbermann interviews. I'd keep thinking "He does it like some singers I know" and what do you know, he really IS a singer. Too bad the Motown revival came much later, you could have given Madonna a run for her money, and with a far better voice than she had then!

Thanks! I did it just for fun, not to get a caaeer out of it, since we only had one or two original songs. But I do a mean "Good Morning Heartache" as me as Diana as Billie.
