Philip Seymour Hoffman's Tony Competition Susses Him Out

High-octane British actor James Corden, above (One Man, Two Guvnors) is deemed to be the biggest threat to Philip Seymour Hoffman as far as Tony award competition goes.

But Corden adores his rival.

At a BBC America conversation hosted by Kurt Andersen last night, Corden declared, "I think Philip Seymour Hoffman is amazing."

He said Hoffman was brilliant in Capote and is no doubt a terrific Willy Loman. (Obviously, Corden has been too busy doing his own show to catch others')

"But I believe his greatest performance," Corden went on, "is the character called Rusty in Along Came Polly."

A hush fell over the room, followed by a few titters.

"The film's not all that great," conceded Corden, "but he's amazing in it."

Everyone's eyes were popping, and mine too, but for a different reason;

I wanted to yell, "The character is named Sandy!"

Toby Jones - the forgotten Capote.

PSH used to be my neighbor....well, we lived a block or two (actually 1/2) from each other...(a pathetic 2 degrees [actually 1 and 1/2] of separation attempt)

♫Suddenly Seymour is standing beside me....♫

All kidding aside...PSH will nab it...and yes, I really was his "neighbor."

Corden also talked about how when he was in History Boys, he loved going out every night with his castmates, though he woke up in strange beds and ended up doing a lot of negotiating about condoms. Now that he has a "baby mama," there's no more condom talk and he knows where he's sleeping.

He also said he's lost weight and is thrilled when he sees a long line at Shake Shack, so he won't make it to the counter.
