One-half Nelson with an offending purse
DJ Colby Bartrug posted this on Facebook:

"So I thought it was 2012 and that I lived in New York City, but I guess I'm mistaken.

"We just left Le Bain at The Standard, New York after being turned away from the elevator due to One-half Nelson carrying a purse.

"The doorman asked him to check his larger bag because it wouldn't be allowed up. Mike the elevator boy turned him away after checking it, saying 'Men aren't allowed to have bags because it's not gay night.'

"Even though he is a stylish man carrying a womens bag, the same size as mine.

"This was a very sad experience, and even though On Top! (grand opening May 15th) will be an amazing party there, seems like the staff don't like our kind."

True--it's very sad and pretty disgraceful for a supposed beacon of NYC nightlife.

Hopefully the On Top party will even things out by not allowing a man to enter without a women's bag.

Regardless, it's a double-standard and if I were you, I'd insist on speaking with the manager!

So any Joe can throw on some unmatched, ill-fitting, UGLY women's clothes, drink like a lush and act like a drunken idiot, and think she's all that and a bag of chips and MUST be treated like royalty for WHAT reason?

Oh wait - "she's" a queen. That says it all.

1.  Come on - it was HIM they had a problem with, not his bag.  I'm sure his bag wasn't acting drunk and obnoxious and WAY over-the-top.  Hell, I've been in several GAY establishments that would have kicked his ass out looking like that. (and there'd be NOTHING wrong with that, either!)

2.   In reaction to your statement "the staff don't like our kind" - please define the word "our" - since you in no way shape or form are MY kind and I'm very proud to say I'm not yours.

3.  I thought it was proper etiquette to call ANYONE a "her" if "she" is in drag/women's clothing.  Am I missing something?  Because in that context, the headline should read "She's not allowed at the Standard with a Purse?"  Ya can't have it both ways.  Either she's a she or a he.  Pick one and stick to it.

That is disgusting. I can understand being asked not to carry a big bag into a party, but if it was a purse, it should have been fine. Nobody would dream of asking a woman not to bring her purse into a party and nobody should ask a man that either. Sounds like simply disgusting, homophobic behavior to me.

Let's start a petition to have the community board there revoke their Liquor and Cabaret licenses, no alcohol + no dancing = no club if we can't enjoy ourselves then no one can. Military style everyone pays the consequences for one person.

Well .... This issue has an easy solution.. dont have gay party at an "anti-gay expression" place.. End of the problem. Less business for them anyways!! Plus some venues have rules and dress codes.. we all have to deal with it! and if its a matter of homophobia, just move the party somewhere else.

Ew, thats totally fucking WRONG, they don't deserve our gay money, last summer it was fabulous, but they should issue an apology on their website. OVER IT. Don't get in that hot tub, you'll get pregnantttttttttttt

In 2012 in NYC carrying a purse or wearing drag is considered breaking rules? WOW talk about becoming vanilla. I remember in the early 90's wearing eccentric clothes or carrying a purse and bringing a scene to a club is what would get you into the club, actually strike that, as far back as Studio 54 and Ian Schrager this is how you would get in if you contribute to the party. And people saying that gays feel entitled in this city? He is not having gay sex and gogo dancing in cruising a back room at the standard. He is carrying a damn purse which even though I do not do, if he wants to carry a purse or wear an ear ring or have long hair or a mullet or whatever the hell he wants it is not entitled, it is equal. And so cancel the gay night too, there are enough clubs and spaces we can all go to. Yet we will take abuse so we can say we are cool and went there.

WAS THE BAG THE REAL REASON HE WAS TURNED AWAY? LOL

Having a night out with fun , and eccentric characters is the whole reason people WANT to go nightclubbing in NY! The Standard needs to get over itself , and realize that if it wasn't for the men with purses, half of the clubs in the city would go BANKRUPT! Embrace EVERYBODY , and know that clubs would be BORING if it wasn't for the city's creatures of the night!

I'm sick of these hotel security goons (many of whom are ex cons themselves) targeting guests who are spending money and treating us like criminals when it is US who bring business to THEM. Rudeness by the staff of these hotels could be curtailed by arresting THEM for human rights violations!

This is funny, its really lame the entitlement the gay people feel they have in the city. Rules are rules.

Maybe they would not let One Half Nelson in because he lloks like a tween.

A writeup like this will surely lead to them changing their policy and then we can rest easier., Now what about every other club in NYC?

"...because it's not gay night." SERIOUSLY!?!?! LAME! Some one like One Half Nelson can only ADD to a party. No matter what type of night it may be. This is supposed to be New York City! Having personalities such as One Half Nelson, who put forth the effort to serve up genius fashion and fascinating looks, attend ANY party is MAGIC!

Dear Michael Musto

How can you have hope for a gay night at an establishment that already is turning people away for being themselves? or has rules about when we can be ourselves and when we can't? What? Why would we even want a gay night there? I don't understand the logic to hoping that On Top will even things out. No ma'am... that's stupid!

Joerichardharris
Joerichardharris

This is the same as every venue in the city. Guys can't wear shorts out but girls can have their asses hanging out. They make rules and of course some of us can break the rules fiercely, we can't be upset when the staff is asked to follow them. No big deal.

Meccarevlon
Meccarevlon

Y'all are stupid for even doing an opening party there after they pulled that shit on Nelson. If that really happened then you should stick by your Boy and cancel the party ... Have some integrity.... Unless the only integrity is making $$$ . I get sick of all this gay rights bullshit but this shit is WAC ... Fuck the standard and find another place to do your party .

One-Half Nelson is actually all that and much more than just some bag of chips. He is a fixture in the NYC nightlife scene and garners mad respect from anyone who knows him.

Personal pronouns are about gender identity and have nothing to do with if a man feels like carrying a handbag.

AverageDude

that doesnt solve anything..thats more like a bitchy thing to do.. i've seen people being  turned down at gay clubs for wearing a "Not-so expensive" shirt. just move the party somewhere else, they dont give a shit cuz the gay party there is just one day.. the rest of the days is  mainly a straight club.

Do you even know what entitlement means? It means getting something because you feel special or different. We don't want special or different, we want the same. It's people like you who think we have a sense of entitlement to gay marriage. It's not entitlement it's our right. We pay the same taxes as you, therefore we should receive the same benefit. Major fail

Soft&LovelyTS
Soft&LovelyTS

I'm unsure as too what you are referring to as entitlement?  It is certainly not entitlement to expect to be allowed to enter a nightclub with a purse on a "non" gay night when it's acceptable at the same establishment on it's gay night.  If that's the case I suppose it's entitlement that gays want to be able to have equal rights & the same privileges that heterosexuals do in the current culture. Yes, rules are rules...but unless those rules are fair & designed to not negate or exclude anyone....then those rules are made to be broken.

DJ Xander
DJ Xander

Entitlement? You damned right! We are entitled to not be racked over the double standard that exists. What's good for the goose is good for the gander .And by the way , they have no "rules" it's whatever the prick at the door decides at the time.

Yeah, and if it's a straight homophobe at the door, you'll get treated like dirt and if there's a gay person like ME at the door, obnoxious straight breeders will get treated like dirt.

Human nature.
