Mitt Romney's Openly Gay Foreign Policy Spokesman Has Quit

Categories: Gaaaaayyyyyy

Richard Grenell is an out gay man who worked for 12 days as Mitt Romney's foreign-policy spokesman.

And he immediately was under heat from conservatives.

Romney reportedly had no problem with Grenell, but the real righties questioned the guy's open gayness and were also concerned about security risks blah blah.

So Grenell has left, feeling it's the right thing to do for Romney's sake.

This is so icky in a bunch of ways. Basically, it's the story of a gay guy working for a cretin and having to leave because even bigger cretins have a problem with his sexuality.

Two questions:

*Is it possible Romney pushed him out but is allowing him to say he quit?

*What was an out gay doing being employed by such a freak in the first place?

Third question, would Grennell's foreign policy advice been as disastrous as that of his former boss, John Bolton? Looking forward to Romney's homo-free foreign policy views. Is it return of the Neocons?

I belong to Jews for Hitler. The meetings are sparsely attended, but that leaves more refreshments for me.

It worsens as things play out.  Mr. Grennell has landed with Representative Mary Bono Mack in her re-election campaign with the intriguing emergency room physician, Dr. Raul Ruiz her Democratic opponent.  Ms. Bono Mack's record is that of the standard cartoon reactionary, loathesome of course on gay issues and total rah rah as to war  Mr. Grennell's misogyny should dovetail well with the Representative's trope.  In this recently redesigned district that has Mexico and Arizona as borders, there is enough of an Hispanic vote to topple her, Mr. Grennell notwithstanding.  Self-Loathesome is the title of the soup this odd group sips.

Fun wonderment comment - how are Mary Bono Mack of Palm Springs and her quite dumb husband, Representative Connie Mack of Florida, able to get away in the House no less with surname nicknames of "Mack"?  Their legal name is Magilicuddie like right out of I Love Lucy.

For all Establishment Republicans (including gay Republicans from families with a staunch Republican-voting heritage):  Party Loyalty ALWAYS Trumps Personal. And somewhere along the line, the Romney campaign will make it up to Grenell for resigning.

Excellent responses, everyone. Wish I could add something without being too-snarky, but the ongoing discussion's better than what you'll be able to pick up from the usual media commentator. MM - your blog's the only one I know (and I do waste my time on other blogs) that's worth reading through, all the way through the comments!

I feel your commentary has missed the unstated but well understood problem in this match-up: Grenell is strictly a bottom. The Mittens campaign requires a penchant, to put it mildly, for flip flopping.

If Mittens' team wishes to spin this departure to curry favor with the demographic of non fundamentalist women which has deserted the Republican nominee wholesale, then it can imply Grenell was let go due to his most unladylike misogyny....

This isn't going to make any difference in the election one way or the other, everybody will have forgotten this guy's name by November.

One cannot today be gay, support republicans, and have a shred of self-respect.  The most any human could achieve is two, and I think I feel most sorry for the republican who has self-respect, for they are the most lost among us.

Is this the guy who suddenly deleted all his snarky twitter post when he took his position with Romney?

If there was EVER a "Log Cabin wake up call" this should be it.

Was he one of those Log Cabin types? Blech. Gays can be their own worst enemies.

No one said they're all good, miss homophobe, any more than all straights are good. But gays have a right to call out problematic queers in the spotlight just as you do for your fellow closeted losers.
