Tommy Tune Gives Me an Update on His Studio 54 Musical

Broadway legend Tommy Tune staged a musical in Florida last year about the hedonistically, aesthetically delirious disco Studio 54, and it was well received.

So it's coming to New York.

At last night's opening night for Emily Bergl at the Café Carlyle (I'll post the review tomorrow), Tommy told me he was this close to clinching the old Roxy space just the other day, but it didn't work out.

The Roxy is the West 18th Street club that was a '70s roller disco, then a black club, then the home of a gigantic gay weekly party where guys took their shirts off and pumped it for years.

And for ages now, it has just been sitting there, a shell of its former self--though Tommy told me it has been scooped up "for an art thing."

I guess it can be another Chelsea-style gallery space.

So where should the show go? I suggested the Studio 54 Theatre--how imaginative am I?--but Tommy said that's not that available because of entire seasons booked there by the Roundabout.

But he sounded optimistic that a space will be nabbed soon, and it sounds like it could be an environmental place that will make sense for a show filled with line dances, drugs, euphoria, and all sorts of mayhem.

Hope I'm on the list!
