Tommy Tune Gives Me an Update on His Studio 54 Musical

Broadway legend Tommy Tune staged a musical in Florida last year about the hedonistically, aesthetically delirious disco Studio 54, and it was well received.

So it's coming to New York.

At last night's opening night for Emily Bergl at the Café Carlyle (I'll post the review tomorrow), Tommy told me he was this close to clinching the old Roxy space just the other day, but it didn't work out.

The Roxy is the West 18th Street club that was a '70s roller disco, then a black club, then the home of a gigantic gay weekly party where guys took their shirts off and pumped it for years.

And for ages now, it has just been sitting there, a shell of its former self--though Tommy told me it has been scooped up "for an art thing."

I guess it can be another Chelsea-style gallery space.

So where should the show go? I suggested the Studio 54 Theatre--how imaginative am I?--but Tommy said that's not that available because of entire seasons booked there by the Roundabout.

But he sounded optimistic that a space will be nabbed soon, and it sounds like it could be an environmental place that will make sense for a show filled with line dances, drugs, euphoria, and all sorts of mayhem.

Hope I'm on the list!

Hi Micheal,

Lovely to meet you Monday and the Barry Z show.  I would like to invite you back to the new and much more awesome BETTE DAVIS AIN'T FOR SISSIES.  After the Fringe Festival I ditched my director and made serious changes.  I found myself in the hands of Susan Campanaro who ain't for sissies.  Girlfriend has completely changed the face of the show.  This time it is a bumpy night, but for good reasons!  Email BetteDavisFringe@gmail.com.  Show is May 4 @ 9:15pm and May 11 @ 9:15pm at The Triad.  Let me know!

Why would you assume it would be so tame?

Her daughter with Borgnine, Varla Jean Merman, is alive. She's got Mama's pipes and Daddy's musculature and five o'clock shadow..

Tune remains ridiculously talented.

I saw a musical a couple of years ago that he did at the Goodman Theater in Chicago: "Turn of the Century," with Jeff Daniels and an ebullient Rachel York. A real audience-pleaser that didn't come into New York. But my God, the imagination, the talent, the execution involved! Anything this man does is of note.

Who will play Disco Sally? Bernadette Peters?

This is one show I will actually leave the house for.

I agree! I can't wait to see this. Sounds like it might end up in an environmental space, like an old nightclub or something, which will make it extra interesting.

How about the old space where Happy Valley used to be?

Are there any old nightclub spaces left in the city? Limelight's a mall. The World's a condo. Palladium's a dorm. Tunnel's Sleep No More. (Then again, I guess it always was.)

There's the old Octagon, if it wasn't torn down for "luxury condos," Mayor Bloomberg's version of Viagra!

I think there's still part of the Tunnel that's available. They had the Ghost the Musical party there.
