Without knowing anything, I'd bet that's a wardrobe decision based on the character being hapless in one way or another. Remember in the "Talented Mr. Ripley" how Matt Damon in his bathing suit looked nothing less than airbrushed away. But he's reported to be big. They did that, again, for the character. Of course that was an okay movie made by at least semi serious professionals, so perhaps I'm wrong....
