Lady Gaga Refuses To Fight Back Against Madonna, So She Fights Back

First, the back story.

Lady Gaga's 2011 hit "Born This Way" had some musical echoes of Madonna's "Express Yourself," so Madonna went into her dictionary and called it "reductive."

She must have been boiling up inside about Gaga's ascendance and was waiting for a chance to publicly strike out and call her a copycat.

And she did sort of maybe have a point this one time.

And now in concert, she does her own hit in a sardonically intended mashup with Gaga's, sprinkling in a bit of "She's Not Me" to underline the point.

Well, Gaga has fought back by not fighting back--though the brilliance of her non response is that is really is a dis after all.

In a rather oblique video, Gaga says that her fanbase doesn't want her to be "cunty."

She says, "It sometimes makes people feel better about themselves to put other people down...or maybe make a mockery of their work. And that doesn't make me feel good at all."

She adds, "Things are really different than they were 25 years ago and that's what makes 'Born This Way' so relevant for me.

"We're really in a different place, and it's OK, we don't have to all slice and hate each other anymore."

Get the dig?

You can read it as saying that Madonna is indulging in 25-year-old behavior. Madonna doesn't realize that things have changed and you don't have to dis, even if you feel you've been slighted.

Madonna is the one being "cunty" and old school and not concentrating on her music.

And Gaga uses "relevant" to describe her own song's appeal to herself, thereby obfuscating the other "re-" word, reductive.

Your turn to not fight back, Madge.

Maybe Madonna should sing in American. Madge Britishness is polluting the concert stage.  Debbie Harry can still belt a tune without all the theatrics and special effects. Chrissy Hynde still rocks.

If Lady Gaga and Madonna collaborated on new songs, it would be a guaranteed hit, and Lady Gaga would just be more of a producer and co-writer. Madonna's arguing with someone half her age about what was an obvious homage. Glad Lady Gaga's taking the high road with her, because it's just going to make Madonna look petty and jealous.  Keep in mind it took Madonna much longer to become "credible" as an artist. But 15 cases where Madonna's been accused of plagiarism over the years? The Little Monsters, one of which is Lourdes, are just going to tell her to please stop.

I downloaded it for free, listened to it a few times and deleted it. Total garbage! She is over the hill. And now she's shows one of her breasts onstage?  Nothing sadder than someone ages not so gracefully.

"It's all art, right?" Sounds like product to me, especially Madonna. Why does she keep putting out such garbage?

Love them both, but Madonna should have retired after Ray of Light.  She would have gone out on top and been the queen of the 20th century.  Now she's just a joke.  She's starting to remind me of late-career Mae West.

These days the only thing 'edgy' about Madge are her elbows.  And Lady Hoo Haw would love to be as talented as Madge.  That's not saying much about either of them.  Sad, huh?

It's amusing that Madonna, who borrowed from everyone (from Marilyn to voguing), suddenly is against borrowing.

Gaga rips off everybody, and it all sounds great. I hear Abba and Ace of Base, along with ELO and Black Eyed Peas -- and Madonna -- in so many of her songs. She uses what influences her. Madonna's look influenced her as well. Now, Madonna is older and apparently, erm, not so glorious as she once was. A dethroned queen with a still-massive ego. OK. It happens. I think Madonna should ignore her, because her outrage only reflects back on her as jealousy. And I think Gaga's words are pretty much on target. Live and let live, be nice. It's all art, right?

Madonna needs to realize she's a nostalgia act and be OK with that, considering the millions that are coming in. It's when she tries to be 'edgy' and compete with the kids that she embarrass you--like when your old aunt came out in an inappropriate outfit.

The reference, my dear, was not to her musical style. Anyone who copies the kind of music JG did won't have a shot at stardom anymore. I watched an excerpt of Lady Gaga in concert and saw - even in a short clip - how she cultivated the adoration of her audience. And I kept wondering where I'd seen that before. Not Madonna, certainly. Then on a hunch, I listened to Judy's entire Carnegie Hall recording (for the 1st time, I'll admit shamefully) and there it was. As to Gaga's songs, the styles come from somewhere else. Again, not really Madonna, or not as much as she'd like to believe. But real experts (like you?) can expound on that I presume.

Madonna doesn't need my sympathy, but I still feel a little sorry for her. For someone who's thought of herself as cutting-edge and transgressive since the Ford Administration to realize that, inevitably, new generations come and take up the mantle, you can do your thing and deal with it gracefully or...behave as she has been. I'd feel the same way if Pat Benatar put on skin tight leather and claimed that she was still the queen of rock n roll and heaped insults upon 25 year olds. Instead, she continues doing great performances, uses her musicianship and great catalog of hits, and has fun.
