Motown The Musical Is Coming! Come And Get These Memories

In my column about theater last year, I bemoaned the fact that there have been jukebox musicals about everything except the one I want to see--Motown!

Well, it's finally coming.

Berry Gordy Jr. is planning a show called Motown which will tell his story while sprinkling in the Motown hits of the day.

And I'm here to say that if it doesn't include the following songs, I will get violent:

THE SUPREMES
"Where Did Our Love Go?"
"In and Out of Love"
"Reflections"
"Love Child"

STEVE WONDER
"Fingertips"
"I Was Made To Love Her"
"Signed, Sealed, Delivered"

MARVIN GAYE
"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (also done brilliantly by Gladys Knight & the Pips)
"You're All I Need To Get By" (with Tammi Terrell)
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (ditto)

THE TEMPTATIONS
"My Girl"
"Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)"
"Ball of Confusion"

JIMMY RUFFIN
"What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?"

MARY WELLS
"My Guy"
"You Beat Me To The Punch"

SMOKEY ROBINSON AND THE MIRACLES
"I Second That Emotion"
"The Tears of a Clown"

MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS
"Dancing in the Street"
"Heat Wave"

THE FOUR TOPS
"Baby I Need Your Loving"
"Reach Out I'll Be There"

THE JACKSON FIVE
"I Want You Back"
"I'll Be There"

Oh, hell, just use them all!

There's not one bad song in the whole catalogue.

although I know what you mean by the "you-know-what anthem"...the show HAS TO have the moment when the Supremes "met" the Temptations..."Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" And Supremes win with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"....say it again..OWW!

Apologies for making this my Motown "bully pulpit"  BUT! If you're really jonesing for a Motown fix, let me recommend the documentary, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" about the house band, "The Funk Brothers" (not "brothers",and not all black either!) , who played behind everyone at Motown...you will wet yr pants.

I'm so glad the TAMI show is finally available on DVD. I was one of the kids that saw it in theaters around the country, when I was 10. Amazing line-up of great musicians. James Brown's cape routine from "Please,Please,Please" would be great in a musical - if anybody else could do it.  James Brown and Chuck Berry both predated & transcended Motown.    Michael, the Motown show will be awesome. Is Berry putting it on Broadway first, before he builds a new theatre for it in Vegas?

Diana made a big statement at the time about how she wouldn't see it because "my life is not an open book" (which is dumb because her character actually comes off relatively sympathetic). But I wouldn't be surprised if she snuck in there out of sheer narcissism.
