New Scientology Movie Isn't Really A Scientology Movie!

L. Ron Hubbard, The Christ of the Closeted
The Master is the eagerly awaited Paul Thomas Anderson film about a man (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) who starts a cult-like religion in the 1950s.

Sound like anyone, maybe with the first initial L.?

Well, Hoffman says this movie has nothing whatsoever to do with Scientology.

But the Hoffman character happens to exhibit some distinct similarities to Hubbard, and the filmmakers are being very careful about how to handle that.

As you may have heard, Anderson has been showing prints of the film to famous Scientology stars, so they'll approve it as inoffensive.

The idea, I guess, is to convince them that is not about Scientology, but if it is, then it's something that won't invoke all kinds of ire and abuse.

Tom Cruise--who appeared in Anderson's 1999 cult film Magnolia--said he had some issues with parts of the film. (I bet a tiny re-edit is in store as a result.)

And next up, The Master will be shown to John Travolta, I guess when the actor gets a free moment in between grabbing for...the phone to call his lawyers.

But why are we being so sensitive here?

When they make movies about 9/11, do they call famous Muslims and make sure the film doesn't seem to about them?

Let's have a movie about Scientology!

And lets have them say that's what it is!

It doesn't have to be a slam job. We can watch and decide for ourselves whether L. should rot in hell.

And either way, it'll make a terrific movie.

I even know who should play L.!

F!

(F. Murray Abraham. He was great as Salieri.)

Didn't  L. Ron Hubbard install some nasty stuff into his religion?

When Hubbard "The Source" comes up with "Knowledge Reports," and "Fair Game Policy," and "Dead Agenting," Shore Stories,"  "Sec checks"  etc...

...his followers are going to put all that to use.

Any dumbass can see this, unless his brain has been paralyzed by fear.

You know you're an evil cult leader when you structure your religion in a military fashion, you have a rehabilitation camp, you keep an intel folder on each member which documents their deepest sins and secrets.

IF they can make a musical about Mormans, the death of jesus, Jonestown, and a documentary called  religulous why not Scientology??????  I think it is a very interesting story and a haunting one.   L Ron Hubbard was a scary guy who made a religion that has been his biggest best seller.   All the truths and lies about LRH are million times long.  Even after Scientology dies out which I hope is soon It will be still be brought up. Just like other dead  CULTS like Jonestown,Branch Davidians and other false prophets.  I think the story can be told to benefit both current Scientologists and critics.  All the lies about LRH can be thrown out and the truth can be told about this madman.  Even the independent Scientologist know the truths about the real LRH.  How people still believe in this fiction story is still mind blowing.

That is true, they are our products, what we call 'overt products '. That means we fcked up. That is precisely what I am trying to correct. But do you honestly believe only the stories which are bad? That there is nothing the church does which is good? I worked in the highest and lowest levels of the church. I have been through every situation you have heard about on the net. (And then some) But you know what? Today I am doing well because I am applying Scn tech in my job and life. My purpose is to help people better their lives without the trouble I've gone through. Anyway this thread has run its course, any of you are welcome to contact me @yahoo.com.

When something becomes "so compelling" that people are willing to do harmful things to pursue it, it becomes harmful.  You are talking to people who know these tragic stories are not just isolated incidents in Scientology.  Look around love.  People who leave Scientology are also "products" of Scientology.

I hear you. I have been where your friend is/was. It is a difficult thing to understand. From your story it is easy to see how your considerations came to be. You are not wrong. Have you ever reflected upon the reverse equation? What did your friends find so compelling that they gave so much to pursue? However they came to their decision there are two things that differ between you and they: knowledge of the subject and personal decision factors. Do you honor your friend? It is ok to find out why they made their decision.

america! you can pray to the devil if you like. no big uproar about satan worshippers, tho, until someone is found dead. what about organizations like judaism (the chosen ones), catholic church (i like the james baldwin quote), etc? religion as a whole is just bad news. in my opinion it gives people the justification to hate/dislike with no backlash. the moonies were claimed to brainwash. what religion doesn´t?

Why doesn't someone help John get "out" of that Scientology prison???  He is such a kind man who loves his family - but, please free him from that jail cell!

Actually I think Mormons do use shunning. And an "extension of the Bible" is awfully generous regarding some alleged, 19th Century gold tablets is an unknown language, though.  I wonder if we took ten random but normal Christians and asked them if the following is about Scientology or about Mormonism they couldn't say: "We did not come from outer space but lived in heaven with God our Father and each other as brothers and sisters. Heavenly Father's Throne is near a star in the heavens that is called Kolob. That's about all we know." Of course one difference is that Scientology has not been as politically active in its homophobia.

Deserve to be hated on? Were you assaulted by a member or Ron? Whatever was done to you, help me understand it so I can get it corrected. If you truly feel this way, then there is something we are doing wrong. (I know someone will make miscellaneous comments on that, but my intention is sincere.)

Mormonisn is based on the book of Mormon, an extension of the Bible.  There is no need to worship any of its founders, or pay $300,000, or disconnect from a relative who ceases being active in the church.  Religions and cults are NOT the same.

Organized religion.  That's what you're talking about.  Not "religion," but "organized religion."  There are many non-organized individual religious practices, like meditation, that can be very beneficial.
