The Honeymooners Is Becoming A Musical! Who Should Costar?

When Michael McGrath won a Tony award on Sunday for his performance as a lovable gangster in the Gerswhin musical Nice Work If You Can Get It, he thanked his wife and said, "Baby, you're the greatest!"

The back story on that reference is that he's set to play Ralph Kramden in the upcoming, absolutely inevitable stage musical of The Honeymooners, the classic sitcom about a bedraggled bus driver, his wife, and their wacky neighbors.

The producers, of course, are hoping the box office goes "to the moon!"

But the other leads haven't been cast yet, so here's your chance to line up...and suggest some names.

I've dug into my little Broadway-lovin' fishbowl and come up with the following insidery suggestions.

I think Alice Kramden should be played by either Jan Maxwell or Jessica Hecht (both Broadway types who are versatile and funny).

Sewer-dwelling Ed Norton should be played by Danny Burstein (ditto).

And Trixie simply has to be Judith Light, who's the boss after her Tony win for Other Desert Cities.

No, these aren't necessarily huge box office names, but they're theater royalty, they're right for the roles, and the show will sell itself.

Trust me. Baby, I'm the greatest!

fifty is the new 30. Plus it's Broadway, not a movie, so older actors always play younger parts.

The show from Miami also included Honeymooners sketches. "How sweet it is!"

These characters are supposed to be in their thirties, tops.  Judith could play Alice's mother but never Trixie.

Julia, starring Audra McDonald.

Always hated The Waltons, HATED, even when John Boy cruised me once on 6th Ave. in front of s.n.a.f.u., and how do you know I'm not from NY?  Go do another booty bump!

Why can't Edward Norton portray Ed Norton?

Yeah, if you want him to chew the scenery and pretend there's no one else onstage.
