They even offer a bounty to anyone who can offer info as to how Magic really got it.
(They mention certain orgy parties with transsexual hookers, which Johnson may or may not have been at.)
I'm all for information and enlightenment, but:
*Low-risk is still risk!
*Transsexual hookers are still women!
*No one will ever be able to know how Magic got infected. There's no way to pinpoint the exact moment and cause of infection so many years after the fact. This isn't like a murder, where you can dig up DNA evidence and witnesses.
So this is all a pointless exercise in attention grabbing.
But at least it's hitting on something we've all thought about:
How did he really get it?
Should we be ashamed of ourselves for wondering?
transsexuals ARE NOT WOMEN! they are men ... even if they are post-op (they were pre-op previously right?)
it's more likely for homosexuals to get HIV then hetro partners. Just how it is ..talking probabilities and stats here
If a gay history for Magic is confirmed, then that is the most likely means of transmission in his case.
so, what you are reiterating is that aids is a gay disease?
He got it from banging pornstars god damnit
Actually the likelihood of HIV transmission from unprotected vaginal intercourse from the woman to the man is far lower than the likelihood of the reverse, or certainly than with unprotected anal intercourse.
So Magic Johnson's story of how he became poz is either denial or a fairly unusual occurrence in a first world country.
Now, if anyone wishes to bray about this - and I'm sure they will - be prepared to explain _exactly_ how the fragile HIV gets from vaginal fluid into the man's penis.
And don't use the "broken skin" trope. That is a low percentage event, which is my entire argument. And micro fissures really don't happen on the man's penis in vaginal intercourse.
I've always thought something about his story rings more down low than plausible. And _if_ he's been making a false claim for all these years then he's been cowardly in that closet way and also has been distorting people's understanding of the relative risks in various unprotected sexual activities - clearly a bad thing.
congratulations! for living! being alive!
Who cares how "Magic" Johnson was infected. The reality is he has been working in HIV/AIDS Charities raising awareness and cash for those living with the virus.
Magic Johnson is a hero of the HIV/AIDS Community !!!
It's irrelevant .....it's a virus. In 2012 we certainly don't need moral judgment.
There's always the matter of people being on the down low. Or of lying in public discourse, thus undermining people's understanding of facts. These are both pernicious tendencies.
But he's done a lot of good whatever the real story is, as you say.
You can contract HIV from blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk. Yes, some men actually DO get it from women. I have been positive for many years, and the question I always hate to hear is ..."How did you get it?" Really, what does it matter? In Magic Johnson's case, I think that it's awful for someone to start trying to dig up "gay dirt" on him. Leave him alone, it's hard enough to survive with this disease.
"Can" is not really the whole question. The question in risk management is "how likely?"
The lining of the colon is much more easily abraded to permit access to the bloodstream than are comparatively muscular vaginal walls, for example. The mouth also in not a great vector for transmission. Neither is the penis a great entryway for HIV during vaginal intercourse. Particularly so in developed countries. The transmission routes and efficacies seem to be somewhat different in undeveloped countries which lack better diets and medical care overall.
actually your pic is the only one I've ever seen where he looks a little ravaged.
I was in the Navy back in the 80's and after HIV/AIDS became front page news (took a while, thanks to a certain president) the Navy was the first branch of the military to have mandatory testing when it was developed -- that was because it had been concluded at the time that most people became infected either by gay anal intercourse or using dirty/bloody needles for injecting illegal drugs, both of which were unacceptable to the Navy -- any sailor who tested positive was immediately put into admin limbo, was thoroughly investigated by the NIS (the Navy's FBI), and eventually discharged (either for being gay or a drug user). In other words, it was cynically used as a tool to purge gay sailors from the ranks (and drug users too, but getting rid of the gay sailors was a higher priority). When Magic Johnson later came out as positive I immediately wondered, which was it -- gay anal sex or drug use with contaminated needles? I guess it's no one business but his (why did he come forward anyway? I think at the time he said he was concerned that he might have an injury with another basketball player that could be bloody, kind of like Greg Louganis cracking open his head on the diving board). But having lots of sex with women? I'm sure he did and I'm certainly no doctor/expert, but I always thought that sounded, well, ridiculous,
@BetteD I don't get your point. A lot of ado about nothing. The bottom like is that he has HIV. Whether he got it from having sex with men or women is irrelevant and nobody will ever know the truth (including Johnson himself if he was having unprotected bi-sexual sex).
It was a responsible thing to do and ofcourse if I was his team mate I would be unwilling to play with him with the fear of getting HIV somehow (injury, etc etc). Not discriminating .. just saying that I would be fearful of catching it too from him.
Maybe he never had it, it was all a p.r. stunt to put a face on the disease and scare people thinking they could get it from frequent heterosexual sex, he never looked like he had it!
Right, but if someone DID get it from gay sex and says he got it from straight sex, then THAT's homophobic.
A lot of people don't know and if he really did get it from women, as he says, then people would know that's indeed risky whereas they like to think it's no-risk.
