When The Gay Topic Is The Deal Breaker With Celebrities

Categories: Celebs

I always push the G word in celebrities' faces and they--or at least their publicists--sometimes respond by using their own G word, Goodbye!

For example:

*When I interviewed Dolly Parton on the phone once, she was nothing but delightful, as she always is. But when the interview turned to the various wild things the tabloids have written about Dolly, the busty singer seemed to get nervous, said "I have to go, Michael, but if there's anything else you need, feel free to call back," and hung up!

*The same thing happened with one-time pop idol David Cassidy. We were doing a phoner and all was good, until I innocently asked if he has a lot of gay male fans. I thought he'd be thrilled to say "Yes," but David seemed to get very uptight all of a sudden and before I knew it, I was talking to a dial tone.

*Elijah Wood used to love me. At events, he'd come up to me and say "Michael Musto! I know you!" But once I playfully wrote up a gossip website's supposition that he was dating a male Lord of the Rings costar--along with the other half of the supposition--he froze me out and looked the other way when I was near him. (But I still love him, and recently enjoyed him in a film where he played a gay boss who tosses off sung wisecracks about swallowing cock!)

*Jimmy Fallon is cool, fun, and warm. He and I once had a great chat about his appreciation for gay people and I even joked that I'd have to make him an honorary gay. Alas, his publicist at the time was a closety gay. That was the last time I got invited to anything Jimmy was doing.

*I had a fun time with Richard Simmons in his trailer in Union Square Park when he was hosting an event there about a decade ago. Our interview was light and giddy and we even ended up sweatin' to the oldies together by crooning Barbra's version of "He Touched Me" in lovely unison. For a few bars. Though he initially seemed ecstatic and free about the whole enterprise, Simmons quickly became uncomfortable and clammed up like a dieter who's had their jaw wired. I left.

Oh, well. I'll still live for the G word.

i saw Jimmy Fallon at a gay bar in HK right before his late night show premiered and I think he was with said closeted assistant.

"I had a fun time with Richard Simmons in his trailer . . ." Oh, God, I just blew chunks after reading that -- please, not so early in the morning!

Elijah Wood...seemed to be going down that  Andy Dick path quite quickly.

David Cassidy has always been humorless and takes offense very easily. I've read about him storming out of other interviews for ridiculous reasons, he's a flake. Richard Simmons seems to be really embarrassed and self-loathing about being gay. I don't know how else to explain it when he's always been so obvious and coming out wouldn't impact his career (what's left of it) at all anyway.

In the past Celebs tried to hide being gay, often at the insistence of managers and publicists, but today the reason so many Celebs run away from the question is because they haven't decided on any permanent sexual preference. They have occasional same-sex hook-ups, but don't consider themselves gay because they also date the opposite sex. They consider themselves "fluid" and resist publicly acknowledging that they swing both ways.In part because the gay and straight communities question "why" they can't make up their mind.Being "fluid" sexually is very prevalent in thirty and twentysomthing actors & actresses.

When Gay marriage is in place and we elect you Ruler of the Gay universe, all these celebrities will be singing a different tune.

Jolene...err, Dolly, I'm giving a wee miniscule pass...no telling who walked in the room at that moment.

Yes, very illuminating. Of course some of these happened a while ago so maybe the stars have gotten cooler about the g word. Is David Cassidy still alive?

Well, you hit the "G" spot, spot on....and like you say, you think they'd be thrilled to have a gay (supposedly, "income-disposable") fan base.

This was extremely informative!! Stars (or at least their publicists) need to loosen up.

 @johnnygordon2008

He's been showing up for concerts drunk and getting a lot of bad press.  Forgets lyrics, sings off-key, shouts at the audience and storms off.

I remember an online article about Cassidy's youth.  It seems that at one point, David  and a male friend were (allegedly) enjoying the sights of Europe.  This was obviously during the early 70's.  Maybe, he tried a magical elixir and decided it wasn't for him?  After all, he was alleged to have a very big....shoe.  This could be the reason while he was so skittish with M. M.

@johnnygordon2008 Simmons...classic/Southern "mamma's boy"....he ain't gonna say a word while she's alive....AND the classic Southern Gothic, "We (straight/gay) don't speak about the "ugly" things...even though "everyone" knows it....Down South, that's called "polite society".

@Derek117 Well, then, they can say they're bisexual, like so many celebrities have done.

Richard Simmon's mother is deceased -- he blubbered about it on The Tonight Show and Paula's Party (or whatever it was called, Paula Deen doing an Emeril impersonation), it was very embarrassing (with all due respect to his mother).

@bethesda Penny Arcade used to say that lesbians don't like women who claim to be bisexual because they're not trying hard enough.

@bethesda Note the above about "fluid" folks being accused of just not making up their minds. Anyone who doesn't declare a binary preference is accused of this. Ticking off the "bi" box won't help this.
