Ann Romney Did Her Job Last Night

At the Republican National Convention last night, Anne Ramsey--I mean Ann Romney--slickly hit all the bases, brimming over with earnest and emphatic love for America and her husband.

Ann started by invoking her fears that real estate isn't destroyed in the hurricane. (And people too, of course.)

And then she started gushing about Mittens.

How he made her laugh.

And how "he was nice to my parents, but he was also really glad when they weren't around," nyuck nyuck.

"I'm still in love with the guy I met at the high school dance," asserted Anne, "and he still makes me laugh.

"A storybook marriage?" she went on. "No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a REAL marriage."

She even brought up MS and breast cancer.

Like I said, the woman hit all the bases!

And she swore Mittens is a really good guy who doesn't brag when he helps people (hey, that's one theory as to why I never hear about that) and who wants to work harder so we don't have to work so hard.

Truth be told, I can't really complain about Ann's performance. She was polished and did everything she was supposed to.

Except convince me.

She kept saying over and over how he made her laugh. Tell me one joke. Did he make his friends laugh when he held down that guy in school and cut his hair off? Was that his idea of funny?

I just saw a picture of her from last night - she looked nice in a red dress. God, those two make me sick.

isn't that Linda Ronstadt's dress from the "Get Closer" album circa. 1982?

I think REAL marriage was a 'dog whistle' to the delegates that it was a marriage of a man and a woman, not one of those icky same sex things.

She was there to give the feminine touch and convince us that Mitt's a standup guy, a wonderful husband, a terrific President. Like you say, she gave a good performance, but it was not persuasive because we know the truth.

I don't get the point of having the wife speak at the convention. How interesting - she thinks he's a great guy. But I suppose they have to fill time with some boring theater. What would be interesting would be if she said 'I've waited years for this moment. Don't vote for this man. He's a complete a-hole. Take my word as I'm an expert on the topic.'

@PhilNY I think you nailed it. When I heard that excerpt on NPR this morning, I was like, "Why did she say that?" It didn't make any sense to me. But as you point out, she was speaking Republi-code.
