Legendary Gay Bathhouse Explored In Film!

Categories: Gaaaaayyyyyy

The Continental Baths was the legendary home of toweled men, anonymous sex, and rising entertainers, starting in 1968, when being gay held more oppressions than today but also, strangely, more sexual outlets.

And it deserves a movie for its landmark status as a place where gays could come out, get out their yayas, and be entertained in between tricking (and even during).

It was a giant boudoir for all types of horny guys as well as a launching pad for campy stars like Bette Midler--a unique one-stop shopping spot for clapping and getting the clap.

And it's all in the new documentary Continental, done by Malcolm Ingram, who's directed films like Small Town Gay Bar and Bear Nation.

And the least you can do to support it is send a few bucks to their kickstarter campaign.

You might even nab producer status.

By the way, I never went to the Continental--though I surely attended other such boites--but I'm in the film, giving my input on that era, the places's significance, and the poignant aftermath.

(I'm in the kickstarter trailer at 4:56.)

I used to go there quite a bit. I lived down the street in the West Side YMCA. Needless to say, I was a busy boy. Headed over to kickstarter now.

I'm about to weep and over-share....that joint was my first bathouse, I was going to college in Michigan at the time, but visiting my dad in NYC during vacation, Midler was the rage and I was going to see her concert (Clams on the Half Shell) and visit her "ancestral" home.

Well, the show at the Palace was sold out (never mind, born NY-er) I knew I could "tip" the door people to get in...did...(hadda wait out the first act at the HoJo's across the street)...and ended up in the super nosebleed seats.  Who knew the joint had THREE balconies!!

Since i told my dad, I was staying with "friends"....I went to the Continental, only to discover I'd spent most of my $$ getting into the Palace....that be damned, I "panhandled' till the attendant got tired of it and said "How much have you got?".....($5/6)....he gave me a locker to stop me from "begging"....BOOTY WONDERLAND!!!

What can a new movie tell me that I didn't already get from The Ritz? Rita Moreno stole that movie, pretty definitively destroying Everything's Coming Up Roses (you can see it on Youtube).
