Romney's VIP Pick Is A Zero When It Comes To Gay Rights

Categories: Politics

Not surprisingly, Paul Ryan--the Wisconsin nightmare chosen by Mitt Romney as his wannabe Vice President--is not the type who'll have a float in a Gay pride parade.

Paul Schindler's piece in Gay City News details the congressman's awful track record when it comes to LGBT rights.

According to the article:

The HRC has found only one instance where Ryan took a pro-gay stance.

In 2007, he voted for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. But after the Repubs unsuccessfully tried to shelve the bill after passage, he voted to kill the bill they'd just voted for moments before!

Ryan voted against hate crimes protections, which fortunately became law anyway.

He did not support the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, which fortunately got repealed anyway.

He voted to forbid funding of syringe exchange programs, which would have reduced HIV transmissions.

He's against gay marriage and the right of gay couples to adopt.

And on a separate topic, he's an opponent of a woman's right to choose.

And then there are the budget issues!

Here's the official Obama campaign reaction to the choice of Ryan as a VP candidate:

"Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy.

"The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires, and deep cuts in education from Head Start to college aid.

"His plan also would end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors.

"As a member of Congress, Ryan rubber-stamped the reckless Bush economic policies that exploded our deficit and crashed our economy.

"Now the Romney-Ryan ticket would take us back by repeating the same, catastrophic mistakes."

Even the self-loathing gay Republicans should be thinking twice right now.

But that's a lot to ask, since even thinking once doesn't seem to be one of their strong suits.

And sure enough, the Log Cabin Republicans have endorsed Ryan as a terrific candidate! Heil!

Did  y'all eyeball the photo of young Mr. Paul on the front page of the Aug. 13 New York Times?

I haven't seen a wrist that limp since Paul Lynde!

The ding dong who speaks for GOProud (the gay Republican self-loathers that you nimbly called "Jewish Nazis") has put out a statement saying Ryan isn't anti gay at all!!!! And Hitler wasn't anti-semitic, I'm sure!!!

He's sort of cute, except for that Gomer Pyle smile. Go-lly!

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets caught toe-tapping in some bathroom stall in some airport.

I've seen photos where he's smiling and it's not great but not horrible.

Mitt can kiss Florida goodbye now.

Never underestimate gay conservative self-delusion. Ideology trumps identity and self-interest. My cousin and her butch girlfriend are both involuntarily ex-military, and voted for McCain. When I asked her what she thought of Obama repealing Don't Ask - Don't Tell, and his support for marriage equality; she said he just did it for the gay votes. Totally unimpressed (even though McCain would never have done it).

Once you're brainwashed by Fox News, nothing else can penetrate. Reality becomes rationalized in support of your views, and your only known self-interest is defense of the conservative ideology.

He reminds me of some of the frat boys I went to school with.  After a bottle or so of Two Buck Chuck they turn out to be an enthusiastic but closeted two pump chump.  Good times, but they never stay until morning.

Two momons, er. morons.

Smells like cough cough repressed fever this straight husband and daddy who's the mainstay in the House showers.  People know stuff about Mr. Ryan and the naif wifey who raises the kiddoes way back home on the farm.

He must have bad teeth.  I have yet to see a photo of him smiling, let alone showing some teeth.

I guess Ayn Rand's bastard child is toothless.

I never understood  what these people are thinking when they want to get rid of Medicare. What do THEY expect to do when they're old? Didn't they think that through?

Well, Paul Ryan as a member of Congress has great health insurance for the rest of his life, so what does he care about Medicare?  But if you're referring to all the regular schlubs who support people like Paul Ryan, I have no idea what they're thinking either.

Well, it's not like we expected someone liberated.
