The "Free Speech" Lie In The Chick-Fil-A Argument

Categories: Advice

jpeg.jpg
Swarms of people have rallied to protect poor Chick-Fil-A from the abuse they've suffered--simply for saying gays shouldn't have equal rights, and for vigorously funding causes that agree with that!

Poor little Chick Fil-A.

But the real killer is that these people don't label themselves homophobes or haters.

Oh, no!

They're "patriots" who are defending the Constitution and touchingly supporting everyone's inspiring right to "free speech."

Huh?

Free speech means you can generally say whatever you want without being carted off to prison or otherwise punished by law.

But it doesn't guarantee that there won't be any repercussions!

You can run through the street yelling "Blacks shouldn't be allowed to get married," but that doesn't protect you from people boycotting your store and using their free speech to announce their horrified lack of support for you.

I suspect that the "patriots" haven't thoroughly thought out their noble act to the point where it's completely devoid of other agendas.

Their moving love of human rights--which they exercise by rallying in support of some old-school gay bashers--doesn't seem to be an equal-opportunity kind of situation at all.

I mean, if someone found a religious book that said conservatives should be stripped of rights and treated as second class citizens, would the Santorums be lining up to buy that person's chicken while calling themselves fierce defenders of the Constitution?

No way.

But in defending the hate mongering Chick-Fil-A, these people can hide behind their flag-waving, pseudo libertarian crap while backing an organization's bigoted views that just happen to mirror their own.

Do they have a right to say that?

Sure. And I have a right to yell bloody murder.

Oh, and I also have a right to remind you that:

(A) The Supreme Court has decided that free speech isn't absolute.

(B) Section three of DOMA has been found unconstitutional in seven federal courts.

If anyone's constitutional rights are being violated, it's same-sex couples who can't get married.

I agree that homosexual radicals are overplaying their hand.  They've had incredible success in getting politicians to fall for their argument that sexual perversion should be a civil right.  Anything for a vote, right?  But anytime these far-reaching laws come to a vote, heterosexuals always win.  Displays of same-sex kissing  at public places like Chick-Fil-A are only going to hurt the push for special rights for homosexuals.

Lipstick lesbians are the exception, of course.

The reality is that McDonalds serves almost entirely unhealthy food and exploits children. Their 'food' is extremely high in fat and chemicals. They have a long hi...story of causing environmental devastation, unimaginable cruelty to animals and exploitation of labor and children. The amount of damage done by McDonalds is so massive that it has altered the course of life on Earth.   But you rightgeous people will support that..instead of man who stated a religous belief.  Amazing how people are promoting "gay" as the most right that exists in the world.   Well guess what drama Queens....you can't force beliefs on people.  The more you push...the more people will push back.

Nothing new here.  It will peter out as more rubbish and detritus of history for as Tony Kushner gloriously emboldened us, there is no turning back.  I am reminded of the late Green Bay Packers player, a minister no less, Reggie White, who was over-the-top offended when criticizzed as to his free speech rights to call us faggots.  Rest in peace Mister White, you loathesome garbage.  Say, does anybody know where Mister White "rests in peace" so we can organize a mass dance on his grave?  I look forward to a dance ball on the grave of bad cholesterol king Mister Cathy and sooner rather than later.

I'm not so sure he overspoke.  Chik fil-a has a legal right to have a business there but are they welcome in the sense of reflecting the values of Boston citizens?  If they were advocating that a minority group or the handicapped shouldn't be allowed to marry, there would be outrage.  People are so used to seeing us as second class citizens.  My friend in Ohio had to pay $38,000 to obtain his partners estate because DOMA passed there.  They co-habitated and shared property for 20 years but according to DOMA, he was a non-spouse/non-relative.  I'm so angry--not at you---keep up the good fight!!  I'm hoping we can move full gay rights through quickly and focus even more energy on trans-rights, creating safety, job security, and understanding for a group that is in many ways more under attack than gays.

@RobInPhilly dear pal - you're right, of course.  But national marriage and inter-state recognition must and will come as well will the Federal DOMA be removed to allow us access to the unjustly unavailabe rights and benefits we have all paid into.  It is a huge matter and it will be won.  Social Security inheritance, estate succession for gay spouses and their bio or adopted children, military and railroad pension inheritance, gay marriahe with a foreign national - all must come with national LGBTQ marriage.  There is no turning back  KEEP THE DISCUSSION GOING!

In the micro quotidian, it is what my husband Michael and I do every day with tons of pro bono at MCGCPA.COM.  We also sponsor the gay current events radio show , The Bill Feingold Show out of Palm Springs on 94.3  - outre hip 'n gay we are surrounded by corporate crooks who've come to retire, goof drunkenly on the 111 golf courses, then, die at the Eisenhower med center.  In 11 years, we're more than 1/2 gay, small business.  We've gay U.N. workers in Somalia!  Anything Mister Musto ever asked of us would be done.  How about that, darlings.

The Boston mayor saying they're not welcome is no worse than Chick FilA saying gays aren't welcome to equal rights.

@ladybug9 No one is going to keep Chick-Fil-A out of Boston. The fact that you're comparing the civil rights of millions of Americans to one fast-food location is really repugnant, and speaks volumes about the supporters of Chick-Fil-A.

The "repercussions" they've felt are record sales because elected public officials took their "tolerant viewpoints" way too far.

PS: Admittedly, the Boston mayor overspoke when he said Chik-Fil-A wasn't welcome in Boston. He doesn't have the power to control commerce that way. But maybe the Chick Fil-A supporters should dance around his office celebrating his right to free speech.

@musto I'm not sure he overspoke.  Chik fil-a is legally allowed to be there but they aren't welcome in the sense of being wanted or in fitting in with what the city stands for.  If Chik fil-a stated that blacks shouldn't be allowed to marry, there would be huge outrage and action.  Some of the population is so used to seeing us as second class citizens.  It's outrageous.  My friend in Ohio spent $38,000 to obtain his partners estate, left to him, because DOMA passed there, because he was considered a non-spouse/non relative by law.  This is after 20 years of co-habitating and co-sharing property.  I'm so angry--not at you--keep fighting!!

@RobInPhilly  @musto Thanks. Yeah, I only meant he overspoke if he though he  could or should control commerce. If he just meant it in a  general "we don't like your bigotry" way, then I'm with him.
