Everything Went Wrong At The Emmys

That's the thesis of The Wrap's Tim Molloy, who questioned some of the choices made in the envelopes--and in the telecast itself--last night.

For example, Molloy thinks it was weird to pick Two And a Half Men's Jon Cryer as Best Actor in a Comedy over candidates like Don Cheadle, Alec Baldwin, and Jim Parsons.

Even Cryer himself joked, "Something has clearly gone wrong!" when he was announced as the winner.

But maybe it was a sympathy vote for having endured Charlie Sheen. If so, it was fully deserved!

Molloy also feels it was debatable to hand out so many prizes to Homeland, "given a stunning year for both Mad Men, and its AMC neighbor, Breaking Bad."

(I actually feel Golden Girls should have snuck in there and copped that one.)

And Molloy didn't like the actual Emmy show!

He felt that a lot of host Jimmy Kimel's bits fell flat, though I happen to have enjoyed at least two of the ones he dismissed:

I liked the fake In Memoriam to Kimmel, as Josh Groban warbled with moist eyes.

I also laughed at the shtick where Kimmel had his parents removed from the theater because he didn't cop the Emmy despite their long ago assurances that he could accomplish whatever he wanted!

But some questions:

What if Kimmel had won the Emmy? Would that whole bit have had to go, in favor of a "Thanks, folks" routine (maybe with Groban singing again)?

Why do other awards shows always win Emmy awards? It's so meta!

Isn't it great that TV provides a home for so many former movie stars? (I'm serious. it's become a sort of Second Chance Saloon.)

And since Mad Men went away with zero wins out of 17 nominations, shouldn't they change the name of the show to The Color Purple?

The worst was bringing out hatemonger Tracy Morgan and briefly showing Jim Parsons looking, shall we say, less than impressed.  No one wants to see that asshat who ruined 30 Rock for everyone.

The problem with the show itself is that was a feast of that new form of comedy that will farrell seems to have inflicted on everyone. isn't it funny that i'm trying to be funny, as i'm not trying to be funny, but really, i'm trying to be funny. it was like watching bridemaids with envelopes.

Cryer was bad enough but I was really shocked when Julia Louis-dreyfus won her category. That was not even close.

I think Eden Sher from "The MIddle" deserves an Emmy.

These awards seem silly to me - for example, Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Homeland are all good shows. How is someone supposed to choose which one is the best and deserves the award this year? I like Damian Lewis - glad he has a good role and got recognized.

I was excited that Glenn Weiss won for the Tony Awards but other than that it was kind of boring. They needed some entertainment. Why not have performers sing and dance? Just presenting awards was dull. If only Glenn Weiss could get some actual entertainment next year. If Tony Award performers could sing and DWTS could dance it would have been a lot more interesting.

I don't know how MAD MEN LOST every award. REALLY LAME. In my opinion, Mad Men is the best show on cable TV and it was upsetting. I think the EMMY voters were sick of giving all the awards to MAD MEN as they have won so many times. Sadly though, they had the best season ever and not winning anything was bizarre.

I hope a new season comes back soon as I miss it. My favorite TV show ever.

@mikeymusto Not to mention Seth MacFarlane's blunder and the Colbert redirection fiasco. Did no one go to rehearsal?

I love the idea of changing Mad Men to Color Purple! Brilliant idea! it's so bold that  maybe they'd win next time. But of course then they'd have to change the title again.

I was happy for Julianne Moore and was rooting for some of the other offbeat types to win--Parsons, Zooey, etc.

Mad Men season 4 was the best; I can barely remember anything about 5 except Lane hanging himself.
