"You Don't Own Me!" Chant Women To Romney

Categories: Activism

Lesley Gore
Well-known singer Lesley Gore and I are best friends.

Well, I might be exaggerating a little. She called me once. And also I know her girlfriend Lois.

And now, Lesley is behind one of the best videos of this whole election season.

In it, Lesley's hit "You Don't Own Me"--an early feminist anthem about a girl who doesn't want to be a boy's piece of chattel--is lipsynched by a whole batch of females (some famous), interspersed with angry facts about the way Romney wants to take over women's right to their bodies while hoping to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

Gore--Lesley, that is--opens and closes the clip, finishing it by talking about having recorded the song in 1964.

"It's hard for me to believe, but we're still fighting for the same things we were then," she says.

"Yes, ladies, we've got to come together, get out there and vote, and and protect our bodies.

"They're ours.

"Please vote."

Please watch.

And thank you, Lesley. I feel like we're closer than ever.

I hope she next does a cover of "It's My Party," making it about the Democratic party.

She's a legend and is very cool for doing this. What a great idea.
