Film Stars Coverged For The Gotham Indie Awards: Here's The Dish
At last night's IFP's Gotham Independent Film Awards at Cipriani Wall Street, Moonrise Kingdom won Best Feature, Your Sister's Sister nabbed Best Ensemble Performance, and Benh Zeitlin picked up Best Breakthrough Director for Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Host Mike Birbiglia was funny, saying he was last at this event many years ago, when he was a coat check--"and I made more money doing that than tonight as the host."
Special honoree Matt Damon remembered coming for the first time 15 years ago, when Calvin Klein gave him a free suit to wear--"that was the first moment that my life got really surreal."
But Damon must love surrealness; he also noted that he'd love to work with another of the evening's honorees, the stimulating David O. Russell (currently represented by Silver Linings Playbook).
"You're like a wolf," cracked Damon to Russell, "and I'm Sarah Palin in a helicopter. It's only a matter of time."
Another priceless moment had Kara Hayward, the 14-year-old girl from Moonrise Kingdom, thanking a list of people, including "My darling agents, I love you all."
Behind the scenes, I caught up with photographer/filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, who said he just completed The LGBT List for HBO--it should air next summer--and the show will include Larry Kramer, Ellen DeGeneres, and Lady Bunny.
And then I finished the dinner, air-kissed a bunch of indie auteurs, then went home to write about it.
My darling readers, I love you all.
